Dead Battery

Hey guys,

My '07's battery has finally bit the dust but at only 8k miles. Is this common? A warranty item perhaps?

I have complained about the battery draining from my last two trips to the dealer and they have inspected the charging system and could not find anything wrong with it. The service adviser also mentioned that Porsche replaces batteries only if the car get's driven a certain amount of miles per year or something to that tune....can't really recall.

The car get's driven every 3-4 weeks.

There is a line in the owners manual/warranty manual that Porsche recommends a minimum number of miles per year.

I bought the Porsche Trickle Charger, and plug it in over the weekend. No battery problems on my 06.

I believe the manual says that certain items are included under warranty only if the vehicle is driven 6000 miles per year or more.

Eric, do you use a battery maintainer? If not, this is the problem...and a new battery will likely do the same unless you one.

Not currently, but I did pick up one up at harbor freight for the Mustang and have yet to use it. It's a little basic and I cannot plug it in the cigarette lighter, so maybe it's time to get one that does.

How much does the Porsche unit sell for?

They are over $100...

Or you could by it from the OEM manufacturer:

note, you'll need the cigarette adapter.

Thanks, I'll check them out.

And to add insult to injury, my fancy Sears battery charger decided to die and now Sears won't replace it because it just exceeded it's 3yr warranty. I think I am going to fix it and never give my business again to Sears when it comes to a battery charger...I might as well buy a cheapo at Harbor Freight next time.

Another good battery trickler/charger is Battery Tender: http://www.batterytender.com/

I have used this unit for several years on a BMW, and for 6 months on a Porsche.

Cheers

1) Battery Tender much better than the Porsche (I have both).

2) Porsche can't be used on sealed batteries, which your new one should be because you don't want aPorsche replacement.

3) A # of threads here if you search "batteries".

Get the generic CTEK charger. Only difference is the Porsche logo and an additional $ 40-50 for the Porsche version as CTEK makes them for Porsche. The generic version is called the CTEK Multi US 3300. Got mine for about $ 65 online. Lot's of different places sell them. Just make sure you get one with the cigarette lighter plug as it's the easiest to connect and disconnect. I bought the charger and the cigarette plug seperately and saved a few bucks over the model that came with that plug. In the process I got two other attachment cables that came with the non-cigar socket plug unit. When you research them all this will make more sense to you.

Hi tejoe,
Could you elaborate why Battery Tender is better than the Porsche trickle charger? I was actually thinking about getting the Porsche charger after I got my Porsche, but have not done so and still continue to use my Battery Tender.

Using the Porsche on an 06 911S any time it will be more than 7 days without driving; while it has worked 'fine' it at times gets almost too hot to touch; I was going to buy a new one and asked a Porsche tech who said "don't worry, it will pop a breaker before it burns up your receptacle, HA HA." I failed to see the humor in this but did appreciate his advice to get an Interstate battery as a replacement.

I've used the Battery Tender on several 69 Mustangs and a 98 Viper for at least 6 years. Not the convenience of a cigarette lighter connection but have never had any problem, + they are (were) cheaper and had a great warranty although I never used it. I don't remember any of the important things like input/output voltage, amps, etc. but I'm sure it is readily available on their website. Finally, this is the business they are in - Porsche builds cars, not trickle chargers.

I second the BatteryTender. Simple and effective. Use one on my FGT. On my Porsche, I swapped in a Braille CF battery when the stock one got tired, and bought their charger as well. Very nice piece but doesn't have a cigarette lighter adapter like the BT. But it does have a permanent mount/socket so that it can be plugged in under the hood.
