911 or Aston V8V, Leaning Toward 911

I appreciate all the feedback from the members of this site, regarding my earlier posting, as I'm still trying to decide on either a 911 or Aston V8V. I've taken both cars on numerous test drives, and even though they're different in a number of ways, I've enjoyed both tremendously. The local Porsche dealership in my area, apparently sensed my indecision, and had a new C4 dropped off at my home this morning, for a day long test drive at my leisure. "Salesmanship never ceases to amaze me." Needless to say, I took the car for a day long test drive.......that put a perpetual smile on my face, as every stretch of road, followed by a shift of the manual transmission, was a new adventure. When I dropped the car off, I went to the service department and spoke with the service manager, and several mechanics. Quite simply, they said these cars are relatively trouble free, and there's a number of service functions I can do myself, as I've always been a shade tree mechanic of sorts. Be able to do some things, as far as servicing, is important to me, because it's like mental therapy.......if that makes any sense. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm leaning toward the 911.

DO IT! get the 911 im telling you, your going to love it. if you get the aston, youll love the looks and when you get bored of the looks after looking at it everyday you will want to have the 911. bottomline- the 911 is more fun and its a classic! either one, hope you enjoy the car

I don't know if this will resonate with you or not, but I previously owned a Ferrari 360 for 2 years, which I sold in March this year out of concern for how bad the economy might get. For a variety of reasons, including totally missing having a super-fun car and the fact that the world hasn't melted down, I decided to buy a 911 C2S Cab. I have only had the car for a few weeks, but I am finding it much more useable and therefore I'm enjoying it more. The Ferrari was a great car and a lot of fun, but I just couldn't drive and park it comfortably in the same way that I can the 911. Depending on how you will use the car and where you live, you may have a similar experience with the Aston...

I assume you've already seen the recent Top Gear episode where they drove the Aston V8V, the 911 and an M6. Two of the three preferred the Porsche. Search this site for a link. You have what someone once called a "high class problem." Good luck with your decision.

I have owned both; a 2007 V8 Vantage, loaded and bought brand new, and the 997.2 is far and away a better car...faster, more fun to drive, better technology inside (engine and ergonomics) and better built. The Aston was cool, but it wore off quickly...I had the Aston for around 7 months, and haven't missed it at all...I thought I would, but as I sensed that values were dumping on the Vantages, I sold it at the top of the market...I got lucky...anyway, the 911 has now convinced me that I will have one in the garage for life, as long as I can afford it!

I own a 911 and my parents own a V8 Vantage Cab. I have driven both...

The V8 sounds lovely! The throttle response sucks! I also don't believe the steering response is the same as 911. From what I've herad the clutch wears too quick... The Aston seems much more fragile compared to 911.

The 911 is so much fun to drive, the handling is good (I am not going to say great due to the understeer). The throttle response is OK, if ou get Sports Chrono the problem will be resolved It is much more responsive in terms of driving. It can be tracked without any problems, and have German reliability...

I would pick the 911, which I did

Monojohn is right. That episode of TopGear is quite revealing. They get the 3 cars tested on a small road around the Isle of Wight under pissing raining by the same professional pilot. The Carrera 2S with some 150 bhp less than the 2 other cars completes the track several seconds faster. It's all about efficiency and this particular trial says it all. Even Clarkson (notoriously anti-Porsche) had to admit it.

I just watched the episode of Top Gear and I have to say WOW!!! I had no idea that 911 can beat the M6 that much in such a short road Aston is all about the looks and sound, but no go... M6 is go, but no show... 911 is go and show (not on a straight line but still it drives really well )

Man I love my car!

I'll take a contrarian view if you're talking about the 997.1 vs. the Aston. If you're talking about a new (meaning 997.2) Porsche vs. an Aston, it's a coin flip. Here's my take, having owned a V8V and driven the 997. The Aston is in a different league in terms of look, both in and out. It looks like its big brother, but with a cheaper price tag. The handling is underrated, the exhaust note is notches above all but a few cars, the interior is classy and comfortable, and it moves. It isn't as nimble as a C2S, but it's close. I took mine through the Canyons and kept up fine with 911s. The car is underpowered, but not to the point where it bothered me. The caveat with the V8V is that you feel like you need to baby it, at least I did. With Porsches, I've never had that feeling. I don't know if my worry was warranted, but I always dreaded beating on the V8V. If I needed a daily driver with zest and dependability I'd go with the 997.2. If I wanted a weekend driver that I could drive occasionally throughout the week, I'd go with the V8V.
