break in period
break in period
I know your suppose to drive the cars easy till about 2,000 miles .... but any sugestions on how to break the car in? drive it easy? drive it hard, dont push past a certain rpm? any dos and dosnt for the 1st 2k? or Should I just forget about all that, and mash all day, and break the car in that way? Thanks guys
I have always broken in my new cars by the book and always observed minimal, if any, oil consumption ( and no mechanical problems). You will read and hear about all kinds of opinions on this matter. But, for me, I drive the car for a couple of hours at a time. I drive my car on country roads and keep the revs between 2000 and 3000 rpm. I occasionally go up to 4000 rpm when the car is warm ( after about 15 minutes). I use light to moderate throttle. I can't wait to get to 2000 miles so I can start to rev it up! In the mean time I can enjoy the curves.
sorry forgot to add that my cars a PDK....Ive red lined mine a few times, and I just hit 200miles ... fu*k should I stop doing that? I havnt red lined it much maybe 1 or 2 times, but I have deff got down on the throttle a few times...

Read the manual. It has the answers to these questions.
What's the VIN on your car? That way I make sure to stay away from it when it's on the market.
LOL, man the break in period is like putting the hottest fu*kin girl infront of you butt naked and saying you can look but you cant touch

You should run a search on this topic and you will find many individuals who disagree with the break-in regiment suggested in the manual. For example post #4 in the following thread is from a respected P-car authority.

IMO: the car needs to be driven and you should very much avoid driving the car within a narrow RPM range for extended periods of time.
If you ever have the opportunity to witness how the Porsche factory, Porsche dealers, and/or Porsche race teams run new engines / vehicles you will ignore the break-in advice provided in the manual.

I may be wrong, but I think in European countries where there is a 2 year warranty, rather than the US 4 year warranty, the break-in period is the equivalent of 1,000 miles.
Should you stop doing that? Yes. Next question...
Whenever I hear of a lot of variance in tips/recommendations regarding these cars, I defer to the factory advice. And I'm not convinced that following the Porsche factory race car path is best. They have infinite dollars and limited time. They need to get their cars ready quickly, and if they need an engine rebuild after 10/20/50 hours, it's a no-brainer.

glw it
1 or 2 red lines will not kill your engine of course. but constant hard riding it _may_ cause some damage in problematic joints that were not yet established. It is pretty simple, really.
If engine was assembled perfectly and all joints are done to the specs you`ll have no excessive wear and tear at all. Chances of that are slim based on what I saw race engines look like inside and guys who did put `em togehter were probably more skilled than mainstream folks who work on car factories.
PS. BTW riding it on 1K RPM on 4th gear will make more damage to it when 1-2 redlines, actually. the only point is not to overload engine during break-in period, that`s all.
