997 C4 deal...whatcha think?
997 C4 deal...whatcha think?
I bought a 335i in april. Like it, don't love it. Should have gotten the 911 the first time around. Local dealer has a 2009 C4 (new), well optioned - heated/ventilated power seats, sport chrono, nav. Manual, which I actually prefer - the one thing I don't like about my 335i is the slushbox.
I will tell you my dream porsche is actually the 4S, not the 4, but after driving this thing I'm not as concerned, it is plenty fast. Where I live we see plenty of rain and some snow, it is a DD and missing work doesn't happen.
Asking price is 78K even, would pay off my 335i for me.
Good deal or are there plenty of similar ones out there? I'm trying to decide whether to jump on this one or take a little more time and wait - no sense in waiting if this is as good a deal as I suspect.
Input please.

Kick your friend out of the car before you race, get a nice light battery, learn to read the road more carefully, and you're better off with a C4S then a C2S. In fact, all of the reports I have ever seen (from professionals) comparing the 4 to the 2 indicate that, while the 2 may be more "fun," the 4 is the overall choice.
And if the weight difference is so huge, perhaps (and I will admit that I'm assuming here) you should go on a diet, as having some huge lump of 200lbs mass off to one side of the car is a lot worse then a 100lbs or so addition throughout the entire car.
You do realize that it's heavier by about 100lbs total, it's just as fast (if not faster considering no wheel spin), you get perhaps 99% of steering feel, and the Turbo is AWD as well.

There are some folks that live in regions that will want the AWD just in case. Could we all mount up studded snows and give a pretty good go with a RWD? Probably, but why risk it. Its nice to know that you have the extra traction and that you might make it to work safely.

I do live in a winter climate, but would have stored a C4S anyways. Ground clearance just too low. My main motivation was getting the wide body look. At the time I felt it was not worth it, but after seeing some of the incredible discounts I wish I had held out a little longer.
Well I have both an AWD and a 2WD Porsche .
I would pass on the C4 .
As many have said the two wheel drive is more fun and in Mississippi you really don;t have the type of weather which woild make AWD impertative . Plus you could get the "s" near that 78K price (after discounts) .
If you must get the AWD and want more Hp .. you do have an interesting option .. a used low mile CPO 997 Turbo (2007) . it's close to that 78K and will leave no doubts . Whatever fun factor is erased with the AWD is made up with the massive Hp once the car has a few mods on it .

used CPO 997 turbo? 78k? where?????????????????
I did say "close" . Low miles one can get them at about 90 and over 10K but under 20K miles an 07 will run in the mid 80's .
oops I just noticed I had not changed my location. As you can see from my post count, dedicated lurker. I am now in Oklahoma, which does have its' share of foul weather. Did residency in MS. I went and drove the car again today and am probably going to buy it. Plenty fast and fun to drive and I really do want AWD. Seems the argument has primarily been about whether or not I want the 4, which is already settled in my mind, and no one has mentioned the price as being crazy, so thus far I am taking that as it is a reasonable price for the vehicle. Agree?

BTW --these reasons are based on accepting AWD as a must have .
1) The C4 is underpowered for an overweight car . At least the C4S has more juice to the squeeze but with AWD the Turbo is the king .
2) Resale on the C4 is dismal . Finding a buyer for that car will not be easy and on trade in no dealership will want it . That's why less C4's are made .. it's not generally a desired car.
3) It's a Porsche 911 .. bit it misses in every category . If AWD is needed for weather it's not the best even for that . Porsche driving school in Finland uses the C4S which now comes with axle lock standard.
4) It's still not agreat price . It's ok but given the demand of the C4 you could probably get one at or near cost .
5) The fact that two other AWD Porsches can run circles around it will always leave doubts. Why have any ?
I say this all the time .. It's imperative to get the right car fresh out of the gate . Even at 78K there is no room for second guessing.
Can you show me some examples of turbos priced close to 78? If these really exist, or heck even a lightly used C4S I'd be interested. I just havent seen anything like that on ebaymotors or autotrader. Perhaps I don't know where to look. Where should I look?
I should explain that I can just barely stomach spending 78 thousand dollars on a car. Pretty frivolous. I do like it and have always wanted one, but I also really like saving money. The 700 a month I'm about to add if I do this will haunt me when I am not investing it (my most important goal is to quit working when I'm 50, and the car may be a real departure from it. But you only go around once I suppose).

Remember i did say "close" . I pulled up 26 2007 Turbo's under 92K and that's what they are asking . What they close at is negotiable. BTW there are even more below 100K and there's always the possibility to get a discount on those too . I believe that 85K plus tax can take home a nice CPO Turbo or one private sale with low miles and plenty of warranty. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/search...=1252212959775

Interesting stuff. How well do these cars age - the people I know who own 911s tend to own them serially and have never mentioned quality issues. I realize they are all just individual cars, but is one with 20k miles or so on it still likely to be in good shape and reliable?
