Is reprogramming a key yourself doable?

Hey guys,

I tossed my only key down the garbage shute there a day ago and after spending a few minutes digging thru the garbage i'm really quite surprised how many people use condoms! let alone toss em in the garbage!

gross!

So, needless to say I went and got a new key ordered. 470 bucks. Lovely, and to top it off they say I have to tow my car to the dealership OR have a tech come out to my condo which is a ways away where i'll be charged a couple hours labour.

Is there a way to program the new key myself once I pick it up? i'm sure its not rocket science...

or...is IT?

thanks for your time.

Hate to say it, but I really don't think there is a way you can do it yourself. They charged you $470 dollars for just the key? thats outrageous. I lost one of my keys for my RS4 a couple months ago and i paid around $180 for the key, but then they charged me around another $150 to program it.

That really blows my mind! $500 just for the key.. Do you have any idea how much they charge to just program the key?

dependent on how long it takes...its a standard labour cost. So, 2 hours there and programmed and back...2 hours labour. Kids need a new pair of shoes...

meh, lets bump it up to 3 hours labour.

bastarts!

there's gotta be a wayyyyy....GOTTA BE!

Well sorry for not being able to offer any help. Hope you do find a way, and if so make sure to tell us for people who have the similar "key disappearing act syndrome."

My M5 key ran me $290 and a replacement key for Benz was $310. I would think Porsche should be close to that. The morale of the story is... don't lose them.

On many cars, it is a simple (i.e. home) process if you have both keys and the car. It's a logical security precaution precluding simple key cloning by a valet or others. I programmed a new FordGT key (using the other two + car) at home.
With only one key I'd strongly suspect that you would need the car and a Porsche specialist to reprogram it. I had a new key issued and programmed for my car, but it was done under warranty (and with my car present) so I can't comment on the fee. But I do recall hearing that the key cost was remarkably high.
Finally, painful as it is, I would pop for the cost of a second key right now. Sooner or later you'll need it, will pay a lot more for a tow or a 'break in' when you do, and you may get the second programming covered under the same fee as the first.
Expensive Porsche parts? What a surprise.

I think I paid about 200 ish for a spare key. That included programming. I had 1 key, but they recoded both.
I think you're getting a bit zinged. Sales are down, so they're making it up elsewhere I guess.

I paid just under $165 for a new key and $100 to get it programmed. This is of course assuming you had another spare key.

You already have the key..just find an independent Porsche service that has PIWIS and he can program the key for you.
