if the audi is a compromise (particularily if its done on purely on a cost basis), you'll be left wanting or wondering what/only if you bought that 911...

audi's are fine cars, but would say they are designed more for the passengers than the driver... the 911 is the exact opposite...

I like Audi's but I probably won't buy another. At 49K on my 06 A3 BOTH CV boots have separated on the AXLE next to the clamp.

The car is just out of Factory warranty and is a CPO car and they won’t cover it under warranty.

The 1-800 number is useless and the Audi Service Rep will not call me though I have requested it for a better explanation.

Probably won’t buy another Audi in my lifetime.

You`ll be surprised how easy is it to commit to 911 car - all you need to do is to decide and start shopping. There are plenty of relatively good used cars in $45K-$50K price range. To get good used one for $40K would be more difficult. $70-$85K will buy you great new 997.2 these days. So just make your choice and stop drooling, it is easier than it looks.

Yep. I like this plan. Check my signature. I bought an inexpensive Jetta TDI to haul the kids around in (even at 9 and 12 they don't really care for the Carrera's back seat) and the Porsche for my own self reward/indulgence for half a lifetime of hard work. This also gives me the perfect hand-me-down, starter car in 3-4 yeas for my oldest.

A 2006 or '07 Carrera at today's prices and a 1 or 2 year old Civic or Jetta and you solve your problem. You can find nearly new condition, low mileage '07 C2's going for the mid 50's or even better and buy a brand new Jetta at dealer invoice. Plus, if you went non-diesel VW's can be financed right now at .9%. Unfortunately the diesels aren't carrying a finance deal at the moment.

And by the way, as an added bonus, the Jetta TDI, once broken in, gets nearly 50 mpg for commute type drives. I'm literally getting 600 miles per fill up in mine which is fantastic with an 80 mile round trip commute. This doubling of your typical mileage, with my commute at least, means the car is paying for 1/3rd of itself via fuel savings. It's comfortable, still feels solidly build at 13,000 miles on the odo and has an enormous trunk.

As much as I like my little Jetta....drive a car like that all week and you'll *really* appreciate the Carrera when you drive it!

On the other hand........nothing wrong with an S5. That's a beauty of a car! It's like getting in to it for the first time every Saturday!

NOW is the best time in decades to buy a porsche... new or used. For the $ you'll spend on a S4 cabrio you could buy a like-new CPO'd 911. You thank us a year later because the 911 won't depreciate nearly as much as that Audi would.

Do it!

You can get into a used 997 starting in the high-30s depending on your needs. A new Audi will depreciate like a mother by comparison (although the S5 does better compared to other Audis). I would figure out exactly what you want in a 997 (color, options, mileage) and then go hunting. It will likely take a while to find the perfect car, but the search is part of the fun, and the longer it takes the cheaper the cars get.

+1

I was about to purchase a brand new BMW M3, but went to test drive a Porsche. Porsche dealer had an 2008 M3 that was just traded in, and I was able to test drive back-to-back the M3 vs. brand new Cayman vs. 2006 911 C2S.

At the end, my decision was easy ... I chose the used 911, and cannot stop smiling every time I drive it.

Go find a used 911, you'll be glad you did. I mean, you only live once, and this is money you probably worked hard for, so you may as well spend it on something you really want.

Ditto. Driving a C2S with PDK got me to trade my 2008 M3 for a C4S... after only owning it about 8 months at a loss of $14k....

DO NOT TEST DRIVE!

Yep. No brainer to go with a pre-owned 997. You'll get a nice one for your budget too.

My wife drives a manual brilliant red A4 S-Line Avant. Audi builds a fine car. IMO interior quality is better than all the other german brands, and it's a blast to drive.

My buddy giving me the keys to his 06 c4s cabrio for a weekend did me in. The test drive sealed it's fate. Had one in my driveway 3 months later. My 5 and 7 year old boys love it.They cruise with me more than the wife! haha

I looked at the S5 coupe. The one I test drove was teh sex meteor black with magma red interior but the quattro and weight made the S5 mediocre at best driving around town. The 911 handles like a driver's car should, is a blast to corner, and overall IMO is a class above the S5. I have zero regrets about going C2S.

Now the R8, especially the V-10 TDI is a completely different animal.

Your kids will be fine in the 911's back seat, i've fit 100 lb chickies in there on occasion
