My new '09 C2S is displaying this message on the odometer display whenever I turn on the key:

"Service in XXX days"

My C2S was bought brand new in late September this year, but it had been sitting at the dealership for almost a year, thus explaining the 1-year service reminder. The car build date is November 2008.

Since the car only has less than 400 miles as we speak, should I bring it in to have the dealer reset the service reminder, or is it something that I can reset myself?

TOOSIXY, unfortunately it has to be turned of at the dealership, they only way to turn those lights off is with the PIWIS tester.

I had the same issue, given I just got my car and that light came on, I asked them to perform the service. Their compromise was to reset the light (at no cost) but they did not perform the service exactly because the car was not being used that much. Talk to them, they might compromise similarly if they think that a service is not required...

 

Same happened on my car which gave me the service light just a few months after purchase. My dealer told me the service wasn't needed and they cancelled the warning using their PIWIS machine. No cost, took about 10 mins.

 

just needs to be reset at the dealer... mine came up a month after i took delivery of mine...

 

my dealer always forgets to reset mine (including this weeks visit) but always more than willing to reset it. I'd be surprised if a dealer tries to charge for this

I picked up my 911S on Oct. 28 with about 50 miles on the odometer and it had been on the dealer lot for several weeks at a minimum. The service counter had been set, as part of the preparation service, to 365 days. Your dealer should have done the same. But, if the car had been sitting for a year I would consider changing the oil now that you have about 400 miles on it. Admittedly, I am a victim of decades of training to change oil every three months, but I can’t stop feeling that, even with modern synthetic oils, changing at least annually regardless of mileage is cheap insurance.

 

Your other option is to buy durametric software for a laptop and reset the light yourself
