OEM sports exhaust vs. tubi
OEM Sports Exhaust (PSE) sounds great but is very heavy in weight. You will be adding weight to the already heavy rear end.
Tubi is even lighter than stock....a lot lighter....and it sounds great and is closest to the PSE raspy sound. Also Tubi has absolutly zero cabin resonance (drone) while cruising on the highway.
If you like a deeper tone than PSE or Tubi check out the Fabspeed dual tone maxflo mufflers. I also like the Rennsport-1 center rear muffler beause it sounds great, it is loud but refined and it does not use any side mufflers.
There are others on this forum that have had great success with FVD and AWE exhaust systems too.

Can't go wrong with Tubi. I was considering the same, but Tubi just made more sense unless you wanted that on-off switch. In my opinion, the Tubi is pretty subdued, but when at WOT sounds great. Check out the link on my signature. Hope this helps.
Like mdrums said: the PSE does have a great sound. If you want the option of switching between loud and quiet it gives you that option (wire it yourself to avoid any DME overide).
But if you plan to leave it loud all the time there are lighter and less expensive options out there compared to the factory option.

As mdrums mentioned, the downside to the PSE system is the added weight. The Tubi has a great sound, which comes closest to the PSE in terms of sound characteristics.
If you want a deeper tone, with less raspiness, Cargraphic also makes a great system for the 997.
Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any specific questions. We've had almost every configuration of exhaust available on our old 997 shop car, so I've heard most of them first hand. tom@rennsport-one.com

thanks everyone - hadnt considered the weight difference between the two options
any views on how PSE vs tubi will impact resale value?

If you are worried about resale value, don't buy any aftermarket parts for your car. Expect zero to 10 cents on the dollar. Buy because you want to enjoy it and are willing to throw away the money. An extra zero to 5 horsepower and better sound for $2000 to $3000.

Guys,
I am shopping a new exhaust system as well for my C4S. I have read your comments and I am wondering what your thoughts are on the Fabspeed Headers, X-pipes, free flowing cats, air intake and CPU upgrade? Am I comparing apples to oranges?
I have heard the the Fabspeed kit drones at highway speeds but then I have heard other people say they love the sound it puts out.
Dollars are not the issue but I would hate to install something that I am displeased with after all of the effort.

I had left my 996 cars stock and I wish I could answer your question better . You may get a few suggestions here but you might try the 996 section and get more recent updated info on that particular model and what's available now for it.
thanks again guys. think will have to take a listen to the PSE hopefully at the dealership and then make a call. think it comes down to weight vs trying to keep the car as "stock" / OEM as possible
agreed i'll get little to any credit for after-market mods in resale. but some non-OEM mods actually detract from the value at least here in HK
all makes sense, thanks!
I think on resale, PSE might appeal to some that are looking for a car that has no aftermarked options. (ie. all Porsche OEM stuff). I'd also say that for a potential trade into a Porsche dealer, again a plus.
