2005 997S IMS failure and warranty question..

I've been looking for a 997S for a while now. I keep finding really good deals on 2005's but I've read some posts warning about IMS failure resulting in new motors having to be paid out of pocket. I'm wondering if anyone knows what is covered under warranty and what isnt since some people were covered and others weren't.
Before buying a 2005 is there a way for me to check if IMS failure would be covered? thanks

Yes, if you buy used car with CPO warranty - it will be covered by it.

Hello All, Well I have a 2005 997S with 12,000 and I just had the IMS failure. The car is now sitting at Porsche waiting if they will fix it or not. I am the 2nd owner and when I purchased the car it was not a CPO car. Has eveyone gone through this? What are my options? Do you think Porsche will help me?

Dang that's terrible. Hope they cover it for you. I've read how people have paid close to $18,000 to replace the motor. Is your car still under its original warranty

search on rennlist or renntech porsche forums - some people had this covered i think even when out of warranty. do not rush into agreement with dealership, you may try to negotiate with PCNA as IMS failure is a trademark of '05 cars.

worst case scenario - engine replacement at your cost - there is a core buyout program there that may reduce your out of pocket costs down to $10K or so.

I would say - contact PCNA directly if you`ll be told it is your fault prior to agreeing to anything from a dealer. Hopefully they will fix it - give you new engine, if there are no signs of 'abuse' - like softronic flash, 200 cell cats, custom intake and etc. - anything that could be 'blamed' for IMS failure (which of course has nothing to do with any of that listed above).

I love modding my cars and yet I have the worst luck with problems. If a car is known to have a certain problem, it always happens to me.

Is your car modded? I want to do intake, headers, and exhaust but if they wont cover IMS with mods I'll have to wait and find a 2006.

we are yet to see here report of /06+ car with IMS failure. it is not guaranteed not to have it, but, still, we are yet to see it.

Thank for your help. I should find out next week if Porsche will replace the engine. No my car is not modded with anything. I only have the car for a year now and I purchased the car with 7500 mikes and only put 4k miles myself. I was thinking about modding the car, now I just want to get it fixed and sell it. I wished I looked at the form before hand. Do not buy non CPO 997s or make sure you buy and extended warranty to cover yourself.

CYi1,

What month was your '05 build? (Porsche supposedly made a change to the bearings sometime after mid-year).

I would not agree with yo on that. In case if car is not modded you have good chances to get it covered by Porsche. In case of complications do research and escalate to PCNA.

As soon as you get new engine into your car your '05 car will gain a lot of value from practical perspective as essentially it is almost a new car after that. It is not necessarily will result in monetary gain if you sell it but I would keep it and drive it as you may be sure - IMS issue on new engine will not happen. Only issue here is to get car fixed for free and I think it should be possible if it really IMS issue, DME scan will not show recent severe overrevs and there are no compromising mods.

In case of any outcome please do post here your results - a lot of us are in same wagon so it would be great to know first hand how it all works out.
