What is the difference between an Carrera & a Carrera S?
The S models have a 3.8l 355HP engine vs a 3.6l 325HP engine, and (active) PASM suspension vs non-PASM suspension.
And yes... as noted (reply #3) S models come with 19" rims.

The S has:
40 more horsepower
PASM (Porsche active suspension management) which is only of use at the track unless you live in an area where the roads are in excellent condition - Available on the non-S for additional cost
19" wheels - Available on the non-S for additional cost
red painted brake calipers
white faced gauges - Available on the non-S for additional cost
S badge on the rear
You'll have to choke up another 11 grand to get into the S and that's before all of the more popular options such as Bose, Bluetooth, iPod interface, Powered seats w/ driver's side memory

On an '07 997.1 the S has an additional 30HP. It's on the '09/'10 997.2 that the diff rises to 40HP.
Above I failed to mention the S bigger brakes (red calipers notwithstanding). These brakes are better and easier to service.

Guys,
a few more differences 997S vs non S:
• Engine, Brakes, Suspension different
• PASM standard on S
• Bi-Xenon standard on S
• 19" & wider wheels/tires (rear) standard on S
• S rides about 1/2" lower
• S is about 55# heavier, gets 1 mpg less
• different steering wheel, different instrument dials and dashboard trim
• different exhaust tips,
• S is .2 to .3 sec quicker in straight line 0 - 60 mph
• Standard will ride a little bit smoother on the 18" wheels and withstand pot holes a bit better.

As adias pointed out some feature differences depend on whether we are talking about a 997.1 or 997.2. Since I never owned a 997.1 I tend to think in terms of 997.2. Here's something else I noticed with the 997.2. It seems that the Sport Steering Wheel and Bi-Xenon headlights which were options on the non-S 997.1 now come standard on the non-S 997.2. I'm not sure about the diameter of my steering wheel but as standard it now comes with the thumb rests and the round center as opposed to the triangular center in the 997.1. To get the thumb rests and round center on the 997.1 you had to select the sport steering wheel option which I believe was something like an additional $240 (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
Edit: Actually I think the change to the round center steering wheel as being standard only applies to the 2010 model year.

nope, not always....
not if your buying used and if this porsche is a faster better performing car then what your coming from.... if your driving a zo6 vette the S will feel better then the none S.... if your driving a none sports car or low end sports like car like a Mitz Eclipse etc the none S will treat you just fine and be hard pressed to feel the differences. If your buying used you can find a well optioned none S car with nearly all the options of an S car minus the HP/added power and the larger brakes all day long. (some you can ever find with the brakes and possibnly more options)
The hunt is half the fun..... The S is a great car, but not always worth the extra $

In my case the only reason to get the S would have been the extra horses but if you do the math that's $275 for each extra horse. If you hang around the glue factory long enough you could probably buy a real horse for that.
As the little girl in that commerical says, "You didn't say I could have a real one"

All of the other S goodies didn't have any value to me, especially PASM since I have no intentions of putting the car on the track. I wish I could have purchased a device that could raise the car, not lower it. Yes, I know the GT3 has an optional front axle lift but it's like $3400 which is crazy.

I would think it is the other way around. PASM is an active mechanism to deal with the wide variations of street/road pavement unevenness. For track only a fixed suspension is just fine.
adias,
The problem with PASM is that is lowers the car. Have you ever driven in New Jersey? Our roads are in such poor condition and also driveways and other entrance aprons are sloped at angles that aren't exactly what you would call Porsche friendly.
My base 997 is already too low for New Jersey roads. Lowering the car further would not be a good idea. Oh, and don't even think about an aero kit or any other kind of bumper or ground effects that make the car lower to the ground if you live here.

I went base and 05 model due to the fact i wanted to take it to the track as a novice. (everyone says get the S for the track but I think for the novice the base is fine) The car is plently fast, I had a great time last year, learned a ton of stuff and the money I saved not going to the S can go toward mods for track use in the future.
You can not go wrong with any model. Good luck.
