Additionally, we probably need a template for the lid cutout and a fitting to cover the jagged cut. This would truly make it diy project.
Agreed. I care more about the functionality and less about the carbon fiber aspect. Plastic similar to the oem airbox is fine with me. I think what most buyers are looking for is oem effectiveness without the absurd price tag. The oem fitting for the left side of the engine lid can be ordered and used on the right side.

I agree with using something other than carbon fiber (plastic? fiberglass?) to keep the price down.

The OEM fitting to cover the lid cut-out is available online. It's called a Sealing Bellows (part # 997.110.250.00). $9.57 from DC Automotive.

it will be cleaner if the ducts used are like the ones on the 997.2, which are permanently attached to the deck. That way the box will look cleaner. I'm still in for a carbon fiber enclosure.

I would like some carbon as well...that 4.0 airbox is nice looking!! And I agree with Joel, a cleaner airbox with the ducts on the deck.

I'm also interested in one of these "X-51/RS4.0" air boxes!
Hurry up.

I will also get some pictures, videos and Dyno results if we go to this dual inlet design. I just wonder how many guys out there wouldn't mind cutting a hole in their trunk lid.

Something just like this but with a full enclosed box: http://www.fabspeed.com/carrera2009_12.html

Any update on this project? Are you guys still considering it?

Hey guys, yes we are very much interested in doing this upgrade and designing a dual intake with a full enclosure for the 996 and 997.1 cars. We are preparing to move into a new larger facility which will be a big move for us, so once we move into the new facility, I will have a car dropped off for a few weeks so we can get all our data and make a prototype. I will make sure to post updates once we get the car in and start the project.
Thanks for everyone's interest in this project.

Hi Alex at Fabspeed, count me in!

I'm working with Mark Basili from Pfaff Porsche in Woodbridge Ontario Canada.
He just ordered the maxflow exhaust and single cold air intake. I'll advise him of these updates to the design and have him contact you for this great new dual cold air intake design instead of the single intake

I also love the look of the X-51 style in carbon fibre.

Thanks

Phil

I have your intake kit in my 997.1 Alex and I would be interested in the dual intake kit as well. Keep us posted as this project is coming along. I think the install should be straight forward, except for the cutting that's the hard part in my opinion...but I will get it done!!

Thanks!

I have current generation FabSpeed intake for 997.1S, ever so lightly used, available for purchase.

Bought it for wife's 2008 C2S for Christmas; you can guess how that went.

Sounded/felt GREAT, but she wants to keep her Pcar bone stock.

PM me with offers, as I'd like to pay it forward.

Will post to For Sale section soon, but first dibbs here.

As to the heat soak issue, I visited the Fabspeed display at last weekend's Porsche-only swap meet in Hershey, PA and asked about this; one of the guys had recently used a thermal / laser gun to check temps of Fabspeed unit versus standard airbox and, while perhaps anecdotal evidence only, reported lower temps on exterior of Fabspeed unit vs. stock. Higher airflow and conductivity properties of CF construction might be contributing factors, but will leave this to the engineers among us. No one can argue with the improved sound.
