Convertible not operating properly

After a few months sitting in my garage with the charger the convertible cover didn't close all the way.

The top would open, the rear compartment cover would open, the top would stack down into it and when the cover was just about closed it would studder open back up and try to close again. Happened to my wife so she closed the top all the way and drove home.

I tried it myself and it did it again but I brought the top all the way up to the close position and then reversed it and tried again, it studdered and the lid wouldn't close again. Tried it one more time and then it closed all the way properly.

Taking it to the dealer for a 20k service later this week and will have them check it out.

Anyone have this issue or know what it is? Maybe the pivot points of the lid or hinges need some white lithium grease.

rana911 is infamous around these parts
I have not as yet, Had such a problem, But I'm pretty sure it thru an error code which will help your dealer get to the root of the problem. If I had to guess though, I would say that, While Charging, It eithier over charged or had some kind of problem that the computer picked up, And this caused your issue. Maybe disconnecting the battery cable for 5min, then reconnect, And see if the cycle reset's it self.

Hopefully, it is a simple fix. I had two issues with my top when I first purchased my car (used 997 Cab S). At first I thought my issue was a weak batter, as my car sat for awhile: One of the cab-pistons had a cracked gasket. I was getting intermittant errors before it finally got stuck in a semi-closed position. Also, a side flap motor of some sort seemed to be slow which caused the top to catch on something. Fortunately, relatively minor parts & labor to fix...but it did take a few days for them to diagnose everything.

Thanks guys - I don't think it was the charger, it's a floating type with electronics that vary off the current once the battery is at full charge and monitors it. Once the battery charge level drops a bit the charger adds a small number of amps to charge it back up.

I believe this is a mechanical issue but I don't know (and don't have a service manual) how the Porsche cover and top systems work. The dealer will figure it out and fix it, I'll post the results of what I find out.

Dealer couldn't replicate issue but they recalibrated it anyway. Seems to work fine now, I think it was acting that way because it was the first time it had been used in 3 months.

Cars can and will develop problems from sitting. Thats where the term "lot rot" came from . I try to drive my car every week, with two weeks being the longest time I'm comfortable letting it sit. I bet you are right about it just being picky after sitting for 3 months.

With the Porsche I try never to drive it in the rain and it doesn't see the streets if there is any reminate of salt from the winter. I hate to let it sit long even on the charger but can't bring myself to drive it with salt on the roads. I'm sure it would survive, maybe I'll start it up once a month anyway in the garage with the doors open and operate the top as long as it's not bitter cold.

^Yeah, I hear ya. You're in between a rock and a hard place. Letting it sit is no good and I wouldn't want to drive it on salted roads either. I don't drive mine in the rain, but would probably consider it if it was sitting too long. I consider sitting worse for the car than rain .
