GPS & Maps Question

My GPS in terms of directions is poor compared to my M3. On occasion, I see the GPS updating where it asks you not to turn it off until it's complete and the bar goes across the screen. Is this updating the maps? Or, like the BMW, do I need to buy a new CD/DVD to get new maps? I have a 2008.

2008 and prior model years do not have disk-based GPS. They are DVD-based maps so I don't think it is updating the maps. Maybe the software is just updating the GPS satellite position?

I doubt its updating software... are you talking about the built in navigation system on a 2008 997? It could be something in the PCM is being worked... though I'm not sure what.

I have to read the message again. But, on the screen it reads updating and tells you not to turn it off. Maybe you're right and it has nothing to do with the GPS.

Question then, how do I update the maps? Do I need to buy an upgrade from the dealer? I'm sure that' like $500.

Yes, the updates are only available from a dealer...that is, you cannot go direct to navteq or whomever the actual mapmaker is. I have the HD system (pcm 3) and the cost is around $500-- $300 for the map and $200 to plug it into the computer to do the download...they cannot tell me what the differences are from installed to new version. The dealership tells me it probably isn't worth it to buy the upgrade. Go figure. You may be able to do it for less with the dvd system if you can do the install yourself once you buy the discs. Also, the DVD package sometimes includes what the changes are from prior version (at least that is how it used to work with navteq and bmw).

Has anyone in the Vancouver area upgraded to the new maps, are there any noticable updates?

From Vancouver: Just updated my MY05. Ordered dvd from USA (cheaper than local), installed by dealer. Don't want to take any chance in screwing up the PCM. PCM software now updated to ver 3, Latest Map dated Aug 09. Do not noitce much difference on the map other than more up-to-date POI.

I'd say even if you get the dvds yourself, go to the dealer for installation. The software update process, from what I understand, is both rather long and contains several steps that could end up disabling or corrupting the PCM operation if done incorrectly.
