How do 997.2s drive compared to previous models

Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to P cars with my only experience coming from my 997.2S and a 997.1 TT

I recently drove a 99 996 cab tip, just because it was being offered for peanuts. That car was a complete dog and could not represent how other 911's drive but it got me thinking how do other 911's drive. I've heard that earlier ones were a bit scary and hairy chested due to snap over stair. I'm becoming a huge P car fan and would love to hear how this car has evolved over time.

would love to hear your opinions and stories

tour- I cannot speak from personal experience, but many Porsche drivers I've talked to say that the handling has been a true evolution of the car. So much so that the old 911 nasty tendency to do those things have been mitigated. In the C4s, for example, the 4-wheels having drive (and grip) has made a difference. The C2s is another one that has evolved very well. Sharkwerks had their '09 C2s (the green one) really well executed with a few body mods, engine tune, exhaust mods... but some real compelling suspension upgrades.

Reportedly, IIRC, one reviewer who drove that car said that in that particular car, the front end stuck to the road so well that the old 911 tendency to end swap was virtually non-existent.

The 911 'purists' (some of them) will always say "the old is better"... but many enthusiasts say today's 997.2 is the best 911 yet. I tend to believe them. And they are not 'dogs'.

The 997.2 is NOTHING like a 996 carrera. The 997.2 S is in the turbo performance range of the 993-996 era. THe C2S PDK is stupendous. I wrote in another post that I had 2 GT3's before this PDK C2S and I am just thrilled with it one year later.
The 997.2 is the biggest increase in performance from one model to the next as I have ever seen. Really it could have been the new 998 or what ever the company wanted to call it. Most models changes since 1965 have been evolutionary. This 997.2 upgrade was revolutionary with the PDK included in my opinion.
As far as handling it seems to me to rival my 997 GT3 and much better than the 996 GT3. The 996 wandered alot, but this 997.2 is like on rails. Especially in a corner under power. Amazing.
Yes the tail happiness has practically been engineered out. And I know as many times as I spun out at the track in the 996.

911 I drove was a 99 base cab with tip, so basically it was about as heavy and slow as a 911 could get and it was a complete DOG. But as I said I dont think this car was representative of a normal 911 and it may have even been sick because it was plain boring to drive

Tour I agree with you. I don't have much exp. in p-car but back in 2003 I've test driven a 99' C2 6-speed and I found it "acceptable" power-wise and performance wise. then last yr I tried my friend's 02 996 cab 6-speed and it was bad. the car felt so heavy, the throttle was slow to respond and it felt like a drag.

They may all look similar to some degree there there are huge differences . I started with a 993 . What a car !!!! It was not nearly as fast as the 997.2 , had much less gadgets , and the most simplistic dash which was almost like a 1960's design on a car in the mid 90's. The sound of the air cooled engine was phenominal and in its time and even to this day it was gorgeous. My next step was the 993 Turbo which I think is pretty close in speed to the current 997.2S . In it's time it was the fastest car in its price range and with only a two year production run it was quite rare. Again the air cooled engine sound whooshing with the Turbos -- it is probably my most missed car of all time.
The 996 was a disappointment . It was still a porsche and was even faster than the 993 but it lacked so much interior quality and shared parts with the Boxter . I decided not even to buy the Turbo . I did trade for an 02 car and it was an improvement over the 996.1 but those headlights were awful and the car had RMS. When the 997 came out I had promished myself before it;s launch "no more Porsches --its getting expensive" so I did not order one . On the day they were launched it was instant car infatuation . What a car!!! It had the character of the 993 but with modern tweaks. I ran home to call dealerships almost begging them to sell me a car and i got one .. the famous blacl/black/ceramics launch car that i call the Porsches best launch car of modern time.

The 997.2 S was somewhat of a fluke purchase for me. It does drive much improved from al the previous models and PDK sure is a nifty gadget . It has this blend of computer game technology with much improved engine too. When I saw the huge discounts back in 09 it was too much to resist . The idea of a bargain Porsche just added to this whole expewrience because never before did i see 20 percent off on a Porsche and I needed to feel like I got at least one car for an amazing price and it just so happened to be .. an amazing Porsche.

i wonder if the 998 will make us think the 997 is a pig? maybe it will make us feel about the 997 the way the 997 made us feel about the 996? i didnt own a 996, back in 2002 i bought my first porsche - a 2002 Box S...LOVED that car...loved it so much i kept it 4 years until i bought a 997. only kep the 997 2 years, then amde a mistake with a cls63 - kept it 2yrs - now back into a 2010 997.2 and could not be happier...i did not order it but i got one with everything i would have ordered except pse - so i added pse, tint, wheels, wood and couldnt be happier...hope its 3 years until the 998...maybv in a couple years ill trade for a 2010 997.2 turbo with pdk...can a car get better than the new turbo with pdk??? i only drove one for a few minutes in a parking lot but WOW!!! amazing

First Porsche and it's a winner

After reading these postings I can't help but smile... I waited a long time for this car and it looks like I picked a winner.(09 911 S pdk coupe) The huge discount (over 20%) and a good price for my trade-in made the deal a no brainer...

I just started playing around with the Sport Crono with the PDK and it's almost scary fast... I love it...

Thank God for dumb luck!!!!

I was super lucky as well

I've lusted after a porsche for a long time and just by chance my lady talked me out of an AM and into the Porsche and my long time friend is the sales manager at the dealer I bought my car from and he made me a deal no one could have said no to.

Its been a marriage made in heaven since then. My only complaint about the car is it needs more POWER !!!!! but that is my complaint about everything I drive LOL. All joking aside it has been the best car I have ever owned.
