And so it happens…my first flat tire :(

Cliffs notes: New Pirelli Sottozero tire (less than 20 miles and 5 days old) with a puncture. It has been repaired but what should I know about a compromised sports tire?

So I was on my way into Boston last night with my girlfriend to meet the rest of my family for a nice dinner out. There was an accident in the Pru/Copley exit off of the MASS Pike. I had no choice but to run over the debris field all over the road. I picked something up that went through my tire in the center water channel. It held for the rest of the ride to the restaurant and almost all the way home before the plastic bit that was lodged in broke off. I got it towed to the place there the tires were put on and they patched it this morning.
Since this is the first time I have had a tire patched what should I know? I feel as though my speed rated tires are no longer as safe at speed as they should be. How fast can I actually drive on them? Any other info would be much appreciated.

Is it an inside patch? or just a plug?

It was taken off of the rim and patched/sealed from the inside.

I wouldn't worry about it for street use, if you take it to the track then my opinion will be different.

It will not see the track but it is also not unusual for the car to see 130 on a nice dry say in the winter. Still nothing to worry about?

I would be worried about doing 130 on a public road (unless you are talking about KM/h), recently a F430 Scuderia was taken away from the owner and sold for doing that speed locally. The government claims that it was used in a serious crime, and seized it.

If you are worried, buy a new one to replace it.

Oh No! your tires are now junk!!! You better replace all x 4 ASAP. Do you want me to take them off your hands for $100?

Just kidding. It sounds like they were repaired properly. I probably wouldn't worry about them.

If you are out metro-west this winter, let me know. I'm keeping my car running, too.

Yes well my car is never going to be used in a serious crime. Most people that I know have done triple digits numerous times in capable cars. 130 is not unheard of for a breif moment. Unsafe, yes...but the question was if the tire could handle it or not.

I am out in Ashland every week or two to see my parents. In fact I will be out there this Saturday.

I would not personally do sustained 130 with a patched tire. I also would not replace the tire and stay at lower speeds.

Hopefully your repair was done by a reputable company and that they would have told you if the tire was damaged to a point it would be unsafe at speed after the repair. I'm not a tire structural expert but I don't see a simple puncture in the tread (not the sidewall) on a tire that new and of that quality that was expertly repaired with a hot patch vice a tire plug being a big concern.

The 130 in a 35 was considered a serious crime. It was a couple of guys going for a spirited drive on an morning, late summer, dry, clear day, and they were deemed to be street racing. In BC now, 40 KM/h over the posted speed limit will get your car taken away for 7 days....good thing that I like to go to the track!

It was fixed by the Hogan tire that i purchase and had the tires installed from. I watched them do the whole thing and it was removed from the rim, cleaned, patched with black goo, sanded, cleaned again and put back on.

OK that is WAY stupid and above what I was talking about. I was thinking the highway burst of 130 not a back road with a 35mph speed limit

my front PA2 tire is plugged. 2 tires on Lexus are plugged. Holds fine.

I have a pro grade mushroom plugging kit in the garage, gets job done in 5min, costs $75, lasts forever as it comes with 200 or so self-vulcanizing plugs. I highly recommend it (if you do not have warranty on tires to get them patched/replaced for free )

I have a patched rear tire and its been fine, at low or HIGH speeds. Not tracked however where there are undoubtedly more stress on the tire. If the tire costs $100, then I would replace it, at $500+ for rear 305' 19" tires, I'm going to fix it!
