DIY oil change help please

Hey everybody. So I decided to change my oil myself this time, many thanks to the excellent DIY write up by JEllis, https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ed-dragon.html (thank you very much if you're reading this, great write-up with great pics)

I bought everything I need, although I'm trying to do it without jacking up the car...I've got a driveway that slopes up to the garage, and I can slide under well enough to see the filter housing and drain plug.

Here's my problem, the first one anway: I can't get the filter off! I attached the filter wrench (type B which I bought from AutoZone) which appears to be a great fit, but I can't rotate the dang thing a single bit. I'm going counter-clockwise but it just won't budge. The only thing I've accomplished so far is the ratchet slipping out causing me to badly scrape my left hand (pics available upon request).

I guess the second thing I'm worried about is what if the drain plug is the same way?

Any help is great appreciated!

Hey,

Glad you like the write up!

Is your filter wrench plastic? The OE filter wrench is metal and I think its a little better. However, the filter should not be on super tight. If your not jacking up the car you might have a leverage problem.

Thanks for getting back so quick Jason. It is a metal wrench, here's the link to the one I'm using:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...ier=153158_0_0_

It's not really adjustable so I don't know how to make it super tight vs not super tight.

Yeah, I'm not jacking up the car...I don't have a jack. I don't know that it's a leverage issue, although suppose it could be, but I feel like I'm getting a good amount of force applied. I wonder if I'll need one of those big tools with the ratchet in the middle so I can pull with one hand and push with the other. Should I be worried about applying too much force?

Well the filter housing is just a plastic piece so you may just have to put some more force into it. I would not worry about putting too much force. The last service dept probably just tightened it too much.

Buy an adapter to go from 3/8 to 1/2" drive. Then use a longer 1/2" rather. That should give you the extra umph it sounds like you need. Or just slip a pipe over your 3/8" rachet.

"I'm going counter-clockwise but it just won't budge."

counter-clockwise from lying on your back looking up at it, or counter-clockwise from having your head above it and just reaching under?

Just give it some mustard. Shops love to over-tighten these things. I keep a spare housing on hand cuz I broke mine taking it off the first time.

Counter clockwise while on my back looking up at it.

Wbellinz, I'll try the adapter tomorrow if more oomph doesn't get it done. My longer handeled ratchet is a 1/2 inch drive while the filter wrench requires a 3/8 inch drive.

cbzzoom, how did you end up getting the broken filter housing off? Hopefully I won't have to face that situation.

I do my own oil changes, and I use the same socket wrench tool that dealers use, it's a perfect fit. I paid about $36 for it, and while pricey, it's better than breaking the plastic filter housing once or twice.

Use one of these, and a breaker bar for greater torque if you need to.

I've got the exact filter wrench that CATTMAN posted above. I'm also in Austin so send a PM if you need a hand or want to borrow the wrench.

Cattman, did you pick up your socket wrench tool from a dealer or is there an online source? Tnx

My tech at my dealership got it for me. It's just a Porsche OEM oil filter wrench socket. You can order it from PelicanParts, right here:

Mine looked a little different, as it had a 3/8 inch socket hole in it. They are available from SnapOn, too.
