997.2 pricing once 991 arrives
997.2 pricing once 991 arrives
So..., what's the expert prediction come Fall when the 991 comes out-- what'll happen to used 997 prices? More specifically, I'm looking at a 2009 C4S with PDK and the usual options. Right now they're going for around $80K, from what I can tell. Once the 3-year leases start coming in, say by March of 2012, might I finally be able to justify putting my hard earned $s on a daily driver say for closer to $60,000?
Thats a big hit.. what I find dealers do at the end of a model cycle is first try to dump with low rates (lease and finance) then they do the big hits. I just don't think the 997 (09) is going to drop 20k because of the 991..
There will be some drop in value since the 997.2 will now be the "old" model, plus I expect that a number of current 997.2 owners will be trading in their Porsches on the new 991. Hence a higher than normal number of 997s will be on the lots with "move'em now" pricing.
However, having said all that, I suspect if the economy continues to flat-line and gasoline prices continue to climb to $4 and beyond, keeping what you have (or trading down to something a little more frugal) might be the order of the day vice laying out for a higher priced (abet more powerful) version of what you already have.

i am not an expert but I guess 997 will folow route of 996. those cars aren`t collectables as 993 car still is,so, I see no reason for 997 to keep its value for long IF 991 will be problem-free with more power and better technology in same old good frame.

But, if the 991 ends up being too big and expensive, the 997 may become favored similar to the 993. The 996 never caught on as well as the 997 due to the inferior interior design and weird headlights. I'm not too worried about the 997's taking as big a hit as the 996's took.

as has been noted on this board before, most porsche buyers care most about looks, prestige and the most basic performance measures like hp and 0-60 times. sadly, we here on this board are in the minority in our passion for the real engineering.
i think very simply it will come down mostly to how different the 991 looks from the 997, and secondly how much better the headline performance numbers are. IMO, the panamera interior alone will cause many to trade in for the 991.
as far as costs, gas prices, etc. -- fair point, but keep in mind that the recent 997's were purchased during already weak economic times, which would suggest that the majority of these buyers weren't stretching to buy at 997 prices, so probably have a good amount of price flexibility with the 991.
even if i'm wrong and the 997 becomes "favored" for its slightly smaller size, etc. than the 991, keep in mind how many of these cars were produced compared to the 993. i don't have the numbers at hand but someone posted it about a week ago and it was a huge difference in used supply b/w 997 and 993. plus, of course, the 993 is different that the 996, 997 and 991 in a critical probably never to be duplicated way (air cooling of course).
i think the better comparison, which maybe someone can give us info on, is how did used F430 prices react when the 458 came out?
