a silly dilemma

as the title says this is kinda of a silly dilemma with no real consequences
but here it is.

There is a PCA autocross on sunday. My PCA region does an autocross once a month and rewards points at each autocross to crown a Champion at the end of the season.

Points are rewarded as follows
1st place 9 points
2nd Place 6 points
3rd Place 4 points
4th place 3 points
5th place 2 points
6th place 1 point

We are two autocrosses in and my point total is ZERO LOL. In all fairness I have not attended either of the events this year. The current leader in my class has actually won both autocrosses so he is sitting on 18 points. There will be 11 more autocrosses this year, so his lead is not impossible to over come.

I want to win the over all championship and I believe my odds are very good as long as I attend all the rest of the events. My dilemma is that I have a GTR this weekend and I'm actually thinking of taking that car to the autocross just because I won't have the option to do so later on. The rules do no allow you to run two cars because when you are not driving you should be helping on the autocross course. If I take the GTR i would be competing in the open class and not scoring any points for the S4 class that is made up of 911's, 911s, Turbo's, GT3, and GT2 that are showroom stock.

I'm actually leaning toward taking the GTR because I would actually really like to post the best time overall for the event and I think the GTR gives me a better chance. Love it or hate it, the GTR is both faster than my car and much easier to drive at the limit.

So the question is do I take my 911S and go for points or do I take the GTR and go for over all glory.

I look forward to your answers

Cheers
Matthew

I can't believe that the GTR would be that much better than a 911s at an autox.

Assuming that it is true, and everything you state is accurate, I would think about what you'd be more proud of, in the end. Also, what are your chances for either in the future, and what about the past.

Have you had ftod before? Have you won your class for the season before? Can you get the GTR another time and take it to another event, like with the BMW club?

If it were me, I'd take all that info account before deciding.

What if you take the Gtr and another driver wins ?
It's not common to hear a victory speech until after a race .. no ?

I'm honestly not sure that the GTR would be that much better either

But it accelerates much faster than my car, and handles at least on par. Now I'm a Porsche person, and if given a choice I'm owning my car hands down, I just feel the GTR is a much much easier car to drive at or near the limit.

No I have never won my class before because I'm very new at auto crossing. I've actually only done one before. The one that I did I won my class by over two seconds on a 30 second track and I think there is a ton of room for improvement in my driving. The current leader of the S4 class came in second.

I believe my time was 4 tenths off the best of the day which was posted by a 5 time national SCCA auto cross champion. One detail I did not mention but is worth mentioning is that while he is a regular at the auto crosses he is going to have to miss this one, which actually is one of the reasons I might just take the GTR and try to get best of the day

Not sure if the GTR will be available again so this might be my only chance

Some one else winning

is obviously a very very real and by most odds likely out come. My thoughts were that the GTR gives me the best possible chance to win. I certainly do not think that winning is in the bag by any stretch of the imagination, but if my intention was not to win I personally would not find it worth participating. After all this is not a DE or a track day, it is a competition where the score is being kept.

Don't get me wrong, if I don't win I'm sure I will still have fun, but my very nature drives me to be the best I can be.

So, are you borrowing a gtr from a friend? Are they cool with you taking it to an ax?

I would say if so do that. You can always o for gold next year.

My experience with ax has been that power an acceleration is not always king but the smaller and nimbler cars rule that land. The gtr is pretty big to toss around those tight slaloms and may not give you what you expect but there's only one way to find out.

I am starting think

you might be right. I've never driven the GTR on anything tight. BTW i have full permission. I think it just come down to how I feel tomorrow morning as the auto cross is about an hour and a half away. If I'm feeling spunky I'll take the 911, if I'm feeling the need for some comfort Ill take the GTR because its more comfortable for the long drive.

I just got the 911 some new rubber today so maybe one more reason I should take her.

My vote is you should take your 911 as the purpose of Autox is not to win but to master your own ride.

My thoughts exactly, I haven't autox in a very long time but when I was doing it, mini's, miata's, lotus, and smaller and nimbler cars always had the best times. I could be wrong.

Glad to see your comment, and don't be so humble. Anyone who knows anything about autox knows that weight is the biggest enemy, followed by poor tires and no driver skills. I was never any good but it really pissed me off that I could get better times in my friend's old S2000 than I could in my juiced up (410HP) 911S.
