997.1 S 1st & 2nd gear Qs:

I have just purchased 08 CPO 997S last week. Love the car and everything about it. I last drove Audi TT 225 in stick and that was a few years back.

What I noticed with this 997S is that at times it is difficult to downshift into 1st smoothly. If the car is stationary, then getting into 1st is no problem, but I notice that when the car is slowing down, even at low speeds, sometimes the pop into the 1st is less than stellar.

2nd gear is not an issue really, but it is not as smooth as the rest gears going into it. Every once in a while it will feel like there's a bit of notching when shifting into 2nd. It never grinds, but just not as smooth as the rest of the gears.

Am I being too paranoid by paying attention to these details in lower gears and is this a 'normal' behavior of the manual tranny in 997S, or should I insist on the shop checking this out?

Thank you.

I've noticed that too, I guess these cars are not meant to downshift this low...
Only up and up, with an occasional second on a tight turn

I rolling, try putting it in neutral and blipping the throttle with the clutch pedal out......then depress the clutch pedal and shift into first. This is needed with most cars to have a chance to get it into first while the car is movng.

I very rarely try to get to first in a downshift. Second is low enough unless the car is really at a crawl. Regardless, I have noticed the same difficulty and think it's normal (maybe intentional).

I don't downshift from 2nd to 1st. Just go from 2nd to neutral and then re-engage 1st after complete stop.

Congratulations on getting the car. I notice the same thing about second gear, but I really never downshift out of second into first. Never find the need.

Do you have a short shift kit? It is more problematic then ones that don't. It is common, and less of an issue when the transmission is warmed up.

+1 Just don't see the need to engage 1st unless I am at a complete stop.

Blip the throttle to match revs (in neutral) and shift should be fine. It is very rare that I down shift into first.

I blip the throttle and rev match into first. The roads by my house are tiny, twisty and hilly so going into first is a necessity. If I didn't, I'd be trying to take a corner and pull up a steep hill lugging 2nd.

Thank you all for the feed back. I know that down shifting into 1st is at most times not necessary and I have noticed before with other cars that going into first from the 2nd is at times a less than smooth shift. I just wanted to confirm that my tranny is not acting outside the 'normal' behavior. I will still ask the dealer about it.

Other than that the car is stellar and I love everything about it. Just glad to have an opportunity to experience for myself what each one of you already did... which is that 997S is an exceptional vehicle.

+ 1 Yup, that is the when I find it necessary to downshift from 2nd to 1st. Sounds like you have fun roads.

Fun indeed! If only the county would maintain them better I'd live on an auto-x coarse :-)

when i'm going crosstown and i spot a hot chick on the crosswalk, i drop into first, for a just second, to make my presence known. it's also very effective in pushing little kids into their mothers arms.

and yet, i'm still single
