Questions, comments, suggestions about color combos.
Hi folks,
I've been lurking the site for a few years. I joined relatively recently after deciding it was time to buy a Porsche. Brief background...........
Owned a 1994 Mazda RX7 that was built by Pettit Racing in Ft lauderdale. Car was amazingly quick and a pleasure to own. After a few years I sold it to purchase a 1994 Acura NSX. I owned that and it was primarily all stock. But then life changed with marriage, new home, kids, etc.
So, I haven't owned a sports car in quite a few years. But the wife and I are ready to get back in. So, naturally, my next car had to be a Porsche.
I've always been the kind of person who hops from car to car. I've owned way to many and the two above mentioned above are just two of my old favorites. Anyway, I always liked the idea of buying a brand new car and keeping it for years and years, and then passing it along to my child. Well, now that we have a little boy (just turned 3) this idea has been really flowing. I would love to purchase a Porsche, drive it as a toy, and keep it for years to come. Then when the time is right, hand him over an old Porsche.
So, with that said, you can see why I'm chosing a P-car. Timeless looks and even 20 years from now the car will still look amazing.
My questions at this time are based on color. We know we want a cabriolet of some sort. Not sure if C2 or 4, but that will be decided after a few test drives. We are split on color combos. So could some of you possibly ellaborate on what color combo you chose and why? Pros and cons of your selection and if you could do it again what you would pick?
I would like a triple black combo, while the wife wants White with the cocoa interior. About as far away as you can get.
Thanks in advance guys/gals

Here are some random thoughts on the subject:
1. The less conventional colors (exterior and interior) are tougher on resale, trade/in. Personally, if i'm dropping $100k+ to spec a new 911, i'd get exactly what i want and say to *ell with the resale, but still something worth considering, especially if you only plan to keep it for a couple years.
2. IMHO, nothing looks better than a clean black Pcar, but keeping it clean is tough. Lots of posts on this subject. Be honest with yourself about how **** you are about the car looking spic-and-span all the time and how dirty and environment you drive in. Also, I've found it's much easier to keep clean in summer vs. winter, so consider how much winter driving you'll be doing as well.
3. A number of folks have commented that the tan interior has glare off the dashboard in sunlight.
The black editions are a good deal if you want triple black.

I can relate to this thread, I love a car with a different look than everyone else. When I was on the hunt for a 911 I knew I wanted a S car, either 2wd or awd, but the color had a lot to with my desicion. I found a 911 CS4 in GA that was Gray with Black, perfect car! but, it was funny when I found my car Silver with Red, I remember talking to the dealership in GA and was told that Carrera Red is a hard car to sell along with Blue and Cocoa because there resale value is low. I feel that is BS!! In my eyes, when you are purchasing a P-Car, buy the car for your likes and don't worry about the resale values. Always remember, there is always someone out there that would think colors are not a big issue. BTW, I'm with your wife, Love the Vanilla White with the Cocoa Interior, take a look at that. Good Luck!
get it in GT3 green with alcantara interior and black rims
unique, gorgeous, and it is like driving a toy
also there is a new baby blue coming up on the new 2012 porsches starting in september I believe my sales guy told me.
I saw the picture on the dealer configurator. Looks hot
While I enjoy my triple black C4S, I would never repeat that mistake again. Keeping it clean and sexy is so hard, and there are so many of them that it gets ridiculous. which is why I opted for the Blue on my 4GTS. (with blue rims)

Go with white/cocoa, and make sure to get a cocoa top. That would rock!!!
Also - it would keep the wife happy
Trip black is noce and I love my black coupe, but the white/cocoa would be much more rare, interesting, etc.
White is really, really great. Look for some photos of white 911s
Keep in mind, color is personal, so you'll get opinions all over the map.

Think of your son man!! If you really turn this car over to him in his early twenties, a white/cocoa cab will have him mobbed by the young ladies!!
Seriously, my local dealer had a white/cocoa cab a while back an it was beautiful and my wife loved it as well. Interestingly, it was purchased by Ellen Degenerous and shipped to her dealer in CA. You'ld be in good company with a white/cocoa cab.

If I was looking at a new black C2 Cab, this one would do. Could probably get more off the asking price. Ask for Jim at the dealership if you are interested. He is a good guy.

triple black is manly as u can get and white/tan cabriolet is considered lil 'feminine' (flame suit on
) between the two, my vote goes to white/cocoa with cocoa top. It will be easier to keep clean.. and less prone to heat in the summer.
but why not consider other color combo?
such as atlas/brown natural (one of my fav)?
or GT silver/carrera red natural (another one of my fav
) ?

I also have the same dream as you: to pass on a nice car to each of my sons (now 3 and 6) when the reach a "special" TBD milestone - I think 25 is a good one... But the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of getting an older (and slower) car that I can work on with each of them (83SC or 88/89 911 are what I am looking for now) over the years because the last thing I want is another brat on the street that has absolutely no respect for what he is driving. Obviously, I am sure I completely understimate the $$$, time, effort, and space that will take but hey, that is what dreams are for no?
Back to the original topic of color...
If you will keep the car for a long time, I would not worry too much about color vs resale value. WHat I would consider, however, is the difficulty to find replacement interior pieces for a custom colored interior 30 yrs down the road... For example, those gingham seat from the 70's are really neat, but try to replace one now...
Cabs are (in my head) fun cars, black cars are beautiful but are a PITA to maintain, and PITA equals no fun. On top of that a black interior can be very warm under the sun. That said, I kinda like the white/cocoa idea personally, particularly for a cab... But it is still a very serious color combo.
IMHO, the benefits of bright colors are:
(1) Kids generally like them better as they are more "candy/fun" looking
(2) Fairly easy to maintain, but probably not as easy as silver or gray
(3) People definitively see you better on the road - which might be a good thing if you are thinking about putting your kids in the car either now as passengers or later as drivers
(4) When you park it, people usually notice it so it is very hard for someone to do anything stupid to the car just because of the attention. I am sure people will have other ideas on this one but that is my opinion...
(5) For some reason, with an orange car, I never get to see any haters as reported on this board. People either like it a lot, or think it is so over-the-top-in-my-mid-life-crisis that haters just laugh at me and leave me alone...
Also, what is your succession plan? pass it on to them when the are 21, graduate from college, etc. or when you die? I am asking because the color a 21 yr old thinks is looking cool is different than what a 63 yr old would find cool... I am just wondering myself...
Just my 0.02,

Very strong points and thanks for the input. Thanks for the above comments also folks. As for some of these questions, let me answer with this...........
I plan on keeping the car until my son is "ready" for it. If all goes well, hopefully when he "grow up" he will have learned to have respect. That being for all things important in life, not just cars or possessions but family, friends, and life itself.
If he has a good grasp on that and more importantly an understanding of the car, the rules of the road, he might be sitting in it after college.
I'm not really concerned with resale. I've waited quite a few years to pick up another toy, and like I mentioned, this one must be special.
I'm actually hoping to restore a VW Ghia as he gets older. Good fun car that won't go 180mph. Plus, it's a good vehicle for him to learn the basics on. Who knows, we build it right, he might not want the P-car.
I'm 41 now, so I would be driving this car around until I'm in my late 50's/early 60's. (that last sentence kinda wigged me out as I typed it)
So, I do want something that will fit me. This is just a toy, not a daily driver or anything like that. Joy rides on the weekends and trips out around the neighborhood is about the extent.
Thanks again for all the input, I'm soaking it all in.

I would love to see pics of the progress on that VW Ghia... Those were sweet looking cars.
These "hobbies" are all about the journey and enjoying life with family AFAIK, it makes these projects even more special...
