My question is... is this a good idea? My wife has the short shifter in her recently acquired Spyder and I love it. My dealer tells me they can put one in my about-to-be purchased C4S Cab.

I've read a few opinions about the short shifter being hard on the gearbox, so I'm just wondering, first, if they are a good idea in most people's opinion. Second, is getting one installed at your dealer is a good idea, or is this something better left alone? My dealer here is quite good, do lots of custom work and OEM installs and high-performance aftermarket stuff as well.

Hoping to get some feedback.

Me too. I've been considering that myself. What is the consensus of people who've had them installed? And do people who ordered it that way from the factory feel different about it?

I really enjoy my SSK and so does my wife. The SSK only feels "notchy" when the trans is cold.

With a new car I would have the dealer install it. That way there would be no worries if a warranty issue should appear.

I highly recommend it. And I would say, based on its design, that anyone who claims that it's hard on the gearbox should re-read their physics texts.
Go and do this. No question. I would strongly recommend the factory SSK. Installed at either the dealer, your private shop, or by yourself.

You will love the feel but beware....one you get used to it, you can never go back!

This will be one of the first mods you will do on any future car!

I love it !!! None of my earlier cars had it . It wasn't until 2007 that i added it to my then 997S so my comparision is about the before and after on the same car .

Before -- The gear throw was longer and felt more relaxed . It had a leisure feel to it.

After -The shorter throw had a great notchy feel to it . I even asked why the car didn't come that way on all of them . When I traded for the Turbo the car had it as an option .

The only negative that i can think of is if one has a shoulder injury the shift is a bit more tight but outside of that I love the short shift.

Just do it, done the same and its worth every cent, nicest feeling manual change out of everything.

If you enjoy performance driving AT ALL, you will kick yourself for not having done this sooner.

If you get the dealer to install before deiivery I believe the SSK then gets wrapped in the entire 4/50 car warranty - ask them.

My car had it as an option new. It is fantastic and the feel is very direct and quick!

I don't see how it can be hard on the gearbox. The whole SSK idea is basically changing the leverage ratio at the shifter. It still connects to the gearbox with the same two cables. The gearbox may see a faster shift change, but I doubt it will have problem handling that.

And if you didn't get it done at the dealer, it's a very simple DIY.

don't even think about it, its a pretty cheap mod, and you will enjoy it every time you drive. Its about 30 min labour, at least that's what it took for my ind. mechanic to finish

The "factory" shifter is just a B&M correct? How much is the short shifter kit from a dealer?

I'm interested in doing this mod myself but have not seen any current DIY instructions. The only one I have come across is for the B&M shifter and from my understanding that install is a little bit different. Anybody know where I can find instructions for the factory shifter? My car is a MY08.
