REDUCED ENGINE POWER warning light...

Got into my 2009 Carrera ; 8,900 miles, W/ PDK today, rough start although its on a battery conditioner. Engine light came on, RED with message REDUCED ENGINE POWER. The car did not go past 45 mph, I was in "limp mode" and made it a few miles to home. I checked the oil which was full, checked the gas cap, no fluid leak, no smoke- just warning lite and real weak driving.

I called 1-800-PORSCHE and a local flatbed truck was at my house withing the hour. My car is at Braman Porsche in West Palm Beach.

From the little research I did on the internet it seems possibly to be a HPFP; high pressure fuel pump.

Has any one had similar instances?

This is a widespread and ongoing problem with BMWs with DI. I have a BMW 535 and have experienced this problem many times. It can be the HPFP or the injectors or a fuel pressure sensor or a pump control module or software. I hope Porsche can resolve your issue quickly and permanently.

There are a few threads out there about HPFP failures on the 997.2 models. Here is a similar post on rennlist: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...p-failure.html

Some pumps have failed. PCNA has an on-going Service Campaign WB08 to replace some pumps (VIN-related).

Just in the dealership this last Friday to have a trim piece replaced under warranty and they flagged the HPFP on my '09. Took about three hours to do the pump, mainly due to having to remove parts to get to the pump and wait for the car to cool down. No worries.

fuel pump was big problem for BMW when they first introduced the 335 engine with Direct Injection..

they had to constantly replace the pump..and later even extended the warranty to 10 years for issues related to high pressure fuel pump.

wonder if the 997.2 is having similar issues with DI..

Yep, it's your fuel pump. Happened to me on my 997.2. They just replaced it under warranty and all was good.

Most definitely your HPFP. My 2009 997.2 C4S (an early Dec 2008 build)had exactly the same symptons at 12,000 miles and they replaced the HPFP. That was 9 months ago and it is still running great. It is about time Porsche took some pre-emptive action to replace that early batch of suspect Bosch HPFP's on some of the early 2009 997.2's!!

Interesting. So, since my car was Nov 2008 build, I guess I can expect this to happen.

Back in action in 24 hours!!!

..........car was flat bedded to Braman Porsche, West Palm Beach Sunday afternoon. I received a call from Jim in Svc at 8:30 AM, they were replacing my HPFP. Got a call @ 2:00 PM. Car was ready for pickup. I picked up car and drove on I-95 in a "spirited" manner. Put on about 50 miles, no rough start, no issues at all. All under warranty. Svc advisor said it would have been close to $2,000. When warranty ends in 2 years, I will definitely look into extended warranty!!!

This is what was on the repair receipt:

8784 checked fault memory. Has fault P1026 fuel high pressure implausible and P1023 fuel pressure too low at start. Sent Val. Vehicle has high pressure fuel pump campaign. Replaced High Pressure Pump. After a test drive with a new fuel pump, check engine light came back on. Checked fault memory again, has fault for P169A Communication with transmission control unit. Checked PDK fault memory and has UO146, UO418, P1991. Needs reprogramming. Reprogrammed DME and PDK control units. Performed PDK calibration. Test drove again. Good. No more faults.

Replaced High Pressure Pump-000-043-301-44

Congrats on getting the issue resolved.

On a side note, my E92 335 also had a HPFP issue but got it resolved and never had that issue again.

Aw man, I've got 8000 on my 09 997.2 C4 and I was thinking I would just have them do this the next time I got it serviced. Guess I shouldn't wait...

HPFP software update...............

........may not be a bad idea, I was surprised it wasnot a recall item. My service advisor said their were issues with Gen 1 HPFP software and there is an update to PDK & DME modules to go along with it. I found out the hard way but really not bad. engine light came on in my garage on Sunday at about 2:30 PM. Flatbed showed up at 3:15, P cat at Braman Porsche in WPB,Fl late Sunday afternoon, car was ready at 2:30 PM, Monday.

After reading the repair receipt for the work that was done I clearly realize that extended warranty is not an option, but rather a necessity when you are planning on keeping your P car. I was informed by a friend who is a GSM at a P car dealership that exrtended warranties are regulated by States and you can often benefit by shopping around on internet out of State, the warranties are the same company but are regulated by state and not dealer....................Just an FYI...........
Still have almost 2 years to make that move but am gonna do it without a doubt. Repairs seem to be expensive, everything is computerized systems that are integrated with other P car systems, almost a no brainer......

what a difference a day makes!!!!

24 hrs after initial WARNING light and HPFP replacement. Not sure if I feel good with inspired confidence or uneasy, Ijsut completed a 500 mile round trip to Key West last weekend and this issue would have been MUCH MUCH more comlicated to happen at the Southernmost Point!

Wonder if that has to do with why BMW moved from bi-turbo to single turbo.
