Visor - Side Protection

One of the deficiencies of our cars (IMHO!) is the flimsy, crappy visors. Say what you want about sports cars, blah, blah, blah, but I use my car as a daily driver - so please don't be upset if I want to complain about the visor.

I poked around on-line for solutions and tried one that didn't really work out, and then tried again with Visormates (google is your friend). I ordered directly from their site, although you can go through Amazon as well. Mitch from Visormates will e-mail you about your car, and I asked for two extra elastic bands during that exchange. Two come standard, so he sent 4! Total price incl shipping was $15.72.

The idea is that you can slide over their plastic shield to provide side protection. I used a scissors to cut some notches in the plastic card, so that the elastic bands wouldn't roll off when the visor is moved back and forth (that roll off happened a couple of times when I was testing in the garage, but the notches seem to keep the bands in place). I also cut down the inside (left side when in the fwd position) upper and lower edges, as the shield is larger than our stock visors. The trimming is not necessary, but it helps when folding the visor up and down from it's original position.

See pictures below:
(sorry for the crappy quality of the pics, but I just wanted to get something good enough to show the function of these visor shields)

these fist two are sort of a before and after, although the first one has the visormate attached, but not retracted. You can see the extra side coverage provided by these shields.

-----
In the 2 pics just above, you can see that the shield is not sagging. I'm not sure how it will work on the road, but I expect it to be fine. It did sag with only one elastic band, so I added a second one to keep it in place.

In the pic just below, I pulled the shield down a bit, to show that there is a way to get a bit more coverage, vertically down. There was another thread where someone was complaining about that, I believe.

----

The last two pics show how I trimmed the shields, and the elastic bands.

I'm pretty excited about it, but the car hasn't left the garage yet with this set-up. Should get some road experience later today or tomorrow...

two other quick notes: I have no affiliation with visormates, and I'm thinking of cleaning up my 'notches' with a dremel. That's about it for now...

One word . . . . . UGLY!

Sometimes form wins over function.

Wear some good sun glasses.

I would agree that the look of it is less than ideal, but if it suits you, that is what matters. I actually like the smaller visors, I'm 6'4" and most cars I rent for work, if I put the visor down, I can no longer see the road

For me, these are purely for side protection on my ~45min meandering commute (bothered by this both ways). The comment on function over form is spot on. 'good sunglasses' do not help for side protection, unless you're talking about 'cataract style'. I did buy a $300 pair of Oakleys that I keep in the car just for the side protection, but I prefer my other $300 pairs of Maui Jims and other sunglasses.

I guess I'm the only one that's bothered by that...

You might try a good side window tint job if legal in your state.

BTW: I keep a pair of those huge ophthalmologist supplied sun glasses (the ones that make you look like 'The Fly') in my glove box for situations like this. They're sort of (no . . . really dorky) dorky looking but they work and you don't have to mutilate or degrade your car.

My wife's short. Is there a flip down accessory to help cover lower? Given the low seating, she can never get enough coverage below the visor, maybe something that clips and flips down?

Thx!

I bought one of these, and wasn't really happy. I wanted more side protection, and this thing offers more protection below the visor.

They sell it on Amazon:
Amazon Amazon

It might help your wife with her need.

Can't disagree that stock visors are flimsy. Given the fact the design has gotten more flimsy over the years I can only assume it's not a high priority item for Porsche's engineers. Would like to see a more robust visor arm as the current one barely supports the visor itself when not locked into the support clip. Not ready for Visormates though but, to each his own. If they work for you that's really all the matters.

When the sun comes in beyond my visors, I simply turn my hat sideways..

I figure it must work, since all the youngin's are doing it. I guess all cars must have short visors nowadays..
