CHP on my tail

I was speeding from an on ramp onto the freeway and noticed a CHP in my rear view mirrow about 100 yards back. I slowed to 60MPH and he then rides my bumper for several miles. I knew for certain I was going to get a ticket. I even wished he would pull me over so I could get the ticket and be on my way. He road my bumper and I continued at 60MPH but after several miles he gave up and just floored his car around me.

What was that all about? Is this normal procedure for CHP?

Games for sure. That's happened to me, they're just seeing if you get rattled.

Any reason you weren't going the speed limit, 65 mph?

I have had CHP do that to me several times traveling from Vegas to LA on the 15. It's like they think they are invisible in your mirror.

Hard to read somebody from this distance, but odds are he was considering pulling you over for something else. Assuming you stayed in the right hand most lane you're were not technically blocking traffic flow, but going that slow in California is a red flag. I'm sure he was evaluating the other possibilities. Whenever a car like ours is going the speed limit or below, the first two thoughts an LE has to entertain are impairment and awareness of guilt.

He spent the first mile trying to decide if you were drunk or otherwise unfit to drive. Then he started assessing your "awareness of guilt". If it's just concern for a speeding ticket, then he doesn't care, but most of us don't go that slow even when running next to a marked unit, so he has to consider "is that car stolen?" The next mile will have gone by while he waited for a report on your plate. All that time he was checking your passenger if any. Could you be carrying someone against their will? What about... He's running down in his mind all the reasons he has seen people cringe at the sight of his car.

Basically, "Why the hell is this guy driving like a wounded Prius?"

Next time, don't go so slow. And check your six better before those entertaining merge exercises.

Gary

He could have been running your plate and looking to see if there were anything that came up on the car. Or you could have gotten lucky as he could be responding to another urgent call prior to having the chance to pull you over.

Maybe he just wanted to admire your car.

He likely wanted to make you nervous before heading back to the HQ to end his shift.

He was trying to decide is he prefers the rear-end styling of the 997 or the 991...

whoi knows, who cares. i had a trooper following me couple of times when i was going to AX run sin early morning, i simply slowe down to 5mph aboe speed limit, leveled with trooper, looked at him and gave a nod, he gave me a nod, then followed a bit behind for a while, then went to exit.
I guess it is just a normal reaction of a bored human after night at shift, he wanted to see car may be, if he would like to give a ticket he would no matter what speed it was. so i would not look too much into it all. some cops are jerks, some are fine but all of them are humans.

I had a friend have more or less the sane situation with an unmarked car riding his bumper, he wasn't speeding at the time, and thinking that it was just some kid wanting a race he sped up and was subsequently pulled over for speeding. He drives a wrx. That's kinda like entrapment

i agree..
lack of desire to prove anything to anybody comes with age when self-confidence level finally gets where it is supposed to be. there are 2 mortgages to pay, 2 kids and extended family to care about, nothing left to prove to anybody. especially to any idiot who wants to ride my bumper for some unclear reason.

1 of 2 things:

1: he knew you may have been speeding so he called in your tag to check to see if you are legit and have no warrants and if none he didn't want to waste his time with a few mph over the limit ticket.

2: He was going somewhere and didn't give a crap about you and you were in his way and he just drove off.

Mind games, maybe.
