I remember walking out of Subway one day when I first bought my car. A kid, who was about 10 or 12, opened the door and upon seeing me walking towards the car, yelled, "Hey, Mister, you have a really nice car!" I turned back, looked at him, and said, "Hey, thank you! You'll get one just like mine one day, but newer!" He giggled and ran inside.

I point to out my son's booster seat in the back and say the kid has to ride in something. I gave up my 2-seater for this.

I've had this happen, maybe just once though. Guy came into an Arby's to pull that one on me. That is annoying...

Talking Hey, Nice Car...

I usually smile and say: "Thanks-- it's a lot of fun if you can find the right road with no cops around!!" That usually brings a laugh from both of us. I don't mind talking about the car since I love cars and like people, but my wife gets bored real quick with this approach...

You've just described me - but add three to five days w/o shaving, a baseball cap and sneakers w/o socks. Few people say anything, but that was with a SY C2S. In the Turquoise Blue GTS they seem to ignore my often-times ragged appearance. I just say, "Thank you" and move on.

i usually divert the attention from me to the car and respond with, "yeah, those germans know how to make good cars"... that way, it's not a "thanks" as if i take caredit for making the car, or had bought the car because I make/spent a lot of money.

Today a guy pulled up next to me at at red light and said, "Your car's perfect except one thing, it's not mine". I laughed and said I appreciate it.... I got a little kick out of that.

I say "thanks" and smile usually
I hate it when people ask me "how much was it" I usually answer "it was enough".. and when they persist.. it just annoys me.. I might be alone on this, but I don't like letting people know how much I paid for it

Have owned one for 2 weeks now and had similar compliments. Basically said 'Thanks' and 'It's taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears but I'm glad I finally did it'. I remember a boy about 13 came up and said 'Nice car' and it was like a trip back in time... I told him 'I was your age too when I wanted this car, with hard work am sure you'll get yours one day'.

Interesting thread... For the first year of owning my car, I found myself going into long explanations of how I took advantage of a bad economy, searched the whole country to find a good deal, etc. (all true). I also like to let people know that I change my own oil, take it to the track, etc. (so it seems like I deserve it).

But ultimately people are going to think what they want, and I am learning to just own it. "Yes I own a Porsche, and I LOVE it!" It's taken me a year to get comfortable with that.

I personally think none of us owe anyone any explanation.. whether we found our money on the street or shed blood, sweat and tears, it is no one's business and I think it is wrong to have to justify to someone else why I (or any of you) have something they don't...
a simple Thanks is all they get from me.. it might be snobby, it might be rude... but I spent all my life trying to justify my toys only to figure out that people will hate you regardless if you deserve your things or not :P
