Need your 2Cents

Hey, I posted a photo of my ride last month and someone asked if my wheels were Porsche wheels. Well, I got my mirror and flashlight out and the wheels have a multi digit part number that starts with 997 and the wheels are made by BBS. So I'm confident that the wheels are Porsche wheels but they are chrome which is sort of weird. I'm not in love with them but since I need to buy my wife a hot tub next month I've been toying around with the idea of having these either powder coated or black chromed instead of buying a new set of wheels. Perhaps some of the black chrome exhaust tips and changing the Carrera S to black on the back. I might need to do some spacers too.

Have any of you done anything like this? Do you think this Ruby Red color would go well with Black Chrome? Or, should I Powder Coat wheels? If black Powder Coat, should I go with gloss or matte black? Should I get the spacers?

Thanks!

I would go, matte black wheel (with spacers), matte black 911s badge and exhaust tips

Those wheels are actually pretty light weight. The chrome however is a love it or hate it. I would never put chrome wheels on my P cars but to each their own. Should be pretty simple to have them painted. Not sure if you need the crome removed before powdercoating but you will for painting. Black looks good but you might look into a charcoal gray color for something a little different. Black chrome looks pretty good too.

The wheels are nice but it reminds me of a Cadillac Escalade with 22"....something that a basket ball player would put on the car.

those costed somebody alot extra. I would sell them. Or leave them alone. Add chrome lugs, spacers and lower the car alittle.

I had thought about doing some forge wheels and keeping the tab below $5k. I can get the wheels powder coated here in Nashville, TN for about $700 3-4 Weeks delivery so I can do it over the winter. I thought about selling the wheels but I'm not sure how much I could get for them plus there is a little pitting on the chrome.

I'm thinking I can put new rubber, spacers and powder coating for around $2500.

Good point. There is a little pitting starting so I'm not sure if anyone would be interested. The cost to re-chrome these wheels is about $800.

with the exposure/contrast on that shot, Ruby Red wouldn't have been my first guess but it's a nice shot of your car.

Porsche non-GR reds (says he who owns Carmon now and Arena previously) can be tricky to get nice blends with. I don't think black chrome or gloss black will look 100% on your car but matte could be ok. My understanding if you do the exhaust tips is you will need ceramic not powder coated (or so I've been told). Otherwise, you might want to go w/ a silver (brushed if aftermarket wheels) direction for wheels which will match your current tips and model designation nicely.

If you decide to go aftmkt wheels, get correct offset so you don't need spacers. Nothing wrong w/ spacers, just easier w/o them. Anyhow, I'd still look to get yours refinished to sell them. Chrome isn't high demand in the east & mid-west but I see a fair # of vehicles in southwest US with them. The Carrera 5 spoke wheels you have are a nice upgrade for both 997 and 996 owners. I think 986 and 987 owners might be able to use them too w/ spacers so there is fair demand.

Also be sure to check w/ places like wheel enhancement etc. who offer trades (at least I think they do). They can always refinish and sell them as a complete set or single replacements to those who need.

Good luck

Please, for the love of God, resist the black wheel syndrome. Do something unique but tasteful. In fact, I think the chrome looks good with the darker red.

Oh...this picture is very true to color. The color seems to change depending on the light and direction. Perhaps its the metalic that changes.

Not into chrome . Not into black.
My vote goes to either a brushed Hre P40 or a Champion Rs98.

i have chrome wheels on my 997 too. personally i think the chrome looks awesome and i get a lot of complements on the wheels. if you get spacers i would go with 7mm front and 17mm rear. i think a bronze wheel would look good with red if you decide to powder coat.
