SERVICE/coolant question

Hi guys,
Still loving my 06 911 S blk/blk.... at 12K miles the engine is starting to really sing like Pavorotti. I last posted about driving through the mountain roads on the way to a campsite... my ears were in awe, and my body became one with the vibrations... yesterday afternoon was the same thing... after a few hours in the car, my general low mood was transformed to one of total involvement and high attunement to the machine...

OK, now my QUESTION. As I said, only 12 K miles... so its not my daily driver, but I may be able to drive it daily for a few months to come. (!!!) Change of work, in a very good way.

So while driving, the oil 'light' came on. I added a quart, all is well. It felt faster after that quart was added--any reason--pressure?

And I also noticed my coolant was low--here's my FIRST QUESTION. Which brand type coolant do I use?

And finally, it's been about a year since last service, but only driven maybe 3K... should I pay for a full service?

Thank you!

Really no excuse for an oil light to come on unless there's a problem - you need to check it more often to make sure you don't have a problem. I'd say stay with Porsche coolant - expensive but you can order from one of the board's sponsors on the right banner:

Sounds like you're enjoying it!!

Check the oil BEFORE the idiot light comes on from now on. Porsche recommended coolant is safest. Yes you need to service it even tho the milage is minimum. For the reasoning behind these terse responses please search the boards. Your car will sing for you. In return check and change oil and other fluids regularly or you will hear more expensive noises.

1+ to both responses. Don't mix coolant types in your Porshce. With that said, coolant isn't a consumable item for an engine so it is either being lost at the coolant tank cap (evident by a white chalky looking residue near the base of the cap and/or neck of the tank ) which is fairly common , beenthrough three caps in 4 years, and just requires a new, securely tightened, cap. Other causes are more problematic and should be diagnosed by a competent Porshce specialist and sooner is better than later. As the water temp gauge in modern Porsches only registers up to 175 degrees and then too hot it can not be relied to give you any real warning until it's too late.

+1 on the Coolant Cap. The updated current cap's part #(look on the top) ends in .04. If your cap's part # doesn't end in .04 go buy a new one.

Thank you!

yep still a major newbie in terms of knowledge about the car. thanks very much. I'll watch the coolant cap, and check fluids more often, and take it in for service ASAP. really appreciate the feedback and will check boards first next time.

Do yourself a favor & check the part # on the cap. If cap doesn't end in .04 buy a new one that does. I've known several guys that have spent their Saturdays to replaced their water pump, overflow reservoir & different hoses/clamps only to find it was the cap that caused the problem to begin with.

Also, in regards to coolant, it's a 50/50 or 60/40 mix (if you need protection down to -58F) of coolant to DISTILLED water and total capacity is 8.45 US gal. Since the OEM coolant is $26+ a gal, you can safely cheat and add just distilled water for a top off. Even if you added a 1/2 gal of distilled water your mix would still be ~ 47/53 and you wouldn't have 3/4 of a gal of unused coolant sitting around to store. Even adding 1 gallon, your mix would only drop to 44/56. That said, if you needed to add a gallon, you'd better find the leak pronto and at which point, I'd just splurge on the gallon and go w/ a heavier mix.

Good luck
