Secondary trunk (bonnet) restraint

As part of the requirements for local track days I need to fit a secondary bonnet restraint, another method of holding down the front trunk (bonnet) lid in case the factory catch let's go.....

Can I please get some feedback from others who have done this as to how and with what they managed it??

So what you are saying is you need a third latch? you have the latch that holds the bonnet shut, then you have the second latch that you have to use to finish opening the bonnet. adding another latch seems a little much for a track day? IMO

The scrutinisers see the latch that holds the bonnet shut & then you have the second latch too open the bonnet as one mechanism. If that fails there needs to be something to stop the bonnet flying open and obscuring vision. Do you not have that issue in the States for your track days??

Your car comes from the factory with a system like this.

I have never heard of a requirement beyond the factory system.

Hood pin latching systems are very common on many types of track cars. Try the link below. Just one place I found but am sure there are others. However, all the systems I have seen require modification of the hood/bonnet in some invasive way.

Here's another with pins specifically listed byPorsce model.

Thanks for the info but don't really want to go drilling holes in my bonnet. I'll make up a wire loop with a small stainless sailing shackle that can be slipped on and put in place with the bonnet upon a little bit and then shut. I was hoping it was a common thing in the US and that somebody had made a little kit to fix the issue.

Any chance of incorporating the holes used to secure the hood badge? You could take the badge off for your track days.

Hood pins would be about the only other option. You could use a different hood for racing to keep the stock hood intact. Going with carbon-fiber would also save a little weight.

Usually it doesn't need to keep the hood closed, just stop it from opening more than a small amount. See if tech will allow you to add strap inside the hood. You can use braided wire cable fixed to the internal hood support and looped on the other end, which you would clip to a point inside the frunk.

So you're running in Super Sprints with PCV or PCNSW? The secondary bonnet tie down can be a DIY with stainless steel cable and shackle you mentioned. I use a small climbing carabiner. There are already two holes in the bonnet just behind the latch which you can loop the cable through. For the other end, lift the rubber seal, push back the carpet and loop the cable around the frame structure behind the front bumper. Leave just enough space to get your hand in to clip the carabiner.

otherwise get a pre-made one from someone like PR Tech in Sydney (AUD$88)...

Yes I intend too, also with BMW NSW where I have been playing until now

As it turns out what you desribe is the conclusion I came too and ended up using some SS marine cable, crimps and a small clip. Seems to do the job. Thanks for feedback all.
