backup cameras law

What do you think of backup cameras?

If the law in US gets passed, all cars would have backup cameras by 2014 (the older date was end of this year)

http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...-for-2014.html

Honda CRV has it on base model according to this article.

If my wife had one on her car she probably wouldn't have backed into my previous car. 'It was in my blind spot!'

it's a nice option and can def be useful in certain circumstances but this is just more governmental nanny nonsense. what next: rubber baby buggy bumpers around the entire car? cars inside giant rolling gerbil exercise *****? trained chauffeurs for everyone?

Probably? Sure, might help... but don't count on it. I thought the same but was, ahem, proven otherwise .

Luckily , my wheels were turned and she somehow hit only causing ~ $1000 paint damage to rear bumper skin on her car... directly beneath the camera...

as an option I love it. It makes maneuvering the car easier and for that matter I wish I had a front camera (trying to park a car as big as my sequoia is...challenging..)

As a government regulation, F&#@ing rediculous!!! Soon we'll all be required to wear helmets at all times and leaving the house will require a full bio hazard suit

Okay in a land yacht, not a sports car.

I have wished for a front camera too when pulling into our messy garage, specially the BMW with the high front.

a backup camera is still not going to save a careless driver from backing into something. But it is awesome aid, specially for larger vehicles like SUV and minivans.

IMO rear view camera is ALL Pros and no cons...have it on couple of the other cars and it makes parallel parking a breeze and also when backing out from a driveway etc know that there's nothin behind on the ground

Makes little difference unless the vehicle is badly designed. Some basic attentiveness as to whats behind as you get in, using mirrors, and people and cars not getting behind vehicles that are in the act of backing out would have things work just fine.

The cameras compensate for stupid behavior or poor design, but are not really needed.

I will tell you at nigh,t backing up an SUV can be dangerous and or scary. With a camera you can see everything. Unless you have used one a lot you really don't know what you are missing.
Backing up to a tailer is a one person job now.

Those silly cameras are doing to be dangerous long term. People won't learn to backup without one, will trust it 100%, and will end up running over something.
