Extended Warranty Or Not

My 997C4S has come to the end of the factory warranty (4 years). I have 16K km(10K miles) on the clock. Cost to extend warranty is $3K/yr. I am going to keep the car. Any thoughts, extend or not?

Extended warranties are one of those personal preference things. Everyone seems to have their own thoughts. The only advice I will give is if you do get an extended warranty make sure it covers everything that the factory warranty would. Take a good look at the exclusions section of the warranty.

3k/yr sounds quite high, but that may just be the going rate in your corner of the world. I bought my '02 used and got a 3rd party warranty on it. It was $1500 for 2 years and covered everything that a factory warranty would with a $250 deductible (I pay the first $250 out of pocket for any repairs.)

For me it was worth the piece of mind knowing I would not get hit with a crazy high repair bill if something major went wrong.

100% yes to getting it. Just a question of getting a factory warranty comparable coverage and for a decent price....as dailydriver says its piece of mind which goes a long way

I would say yes, but 3K a year seems a bit high to me. I just purchases a Platinum Warranty (highest one offered) for 3,500 and its good for 6 years.

Who/where did you buy your warranty from?

The warranty is as per the original, standard exclusions. I am not big on over-insurance, however one engine failure (considering I am pretty heavy with the right foot) makes it worth it. The risk is low but the consequence is high. The real dilemma is the low miles/kms I use the car, so the risk frequency is low. Heck I margin trade, so why do I choke on this risk/reward decision. The mind is a strange thing. The poindexter in me says it works out $1/km ($0.62/mile). The other cortex says, I know an easy solution .... drive it more. Why is it that I don't mind the initial outlay it's the ongoing outgoings that eats me (rhetorical). Jury is still out. Thanks for the advice.

Asia my friend, captive audience. I wish the "Platinum Warranty" was an option here, sounds like a great deal.

Not a daily driver so different thinking applies. The only option is the dealer/factory warranty. I have contempt for the garage queen, but I have to stand up and say I am guilty. Going on the fourth set of tires if that redeems me.

mihink, I bought my warranty from Fidelity, through my Porsche dealer.

nine911, I didn't see your location when I posted earlier. Its amazing how much more expensive, and how much cheaper car parts are depending where you are in the world. My opinion is that at 3k per year, you're going to spend A LOT more on the warranty than you ever will on repairs.

Umm, $1/km works out to $1.61/mi. A mile is longer than a km.. (Just saying) And that is a very expensive warranty, given how little you drive the car.

3K a year seems really high to me. You could probably find a good exclusionary warranty for 3-5 years at that price if you shop around.

Yep. My bad, put the wrong conversion in the brackets. Anyway, still closer to a descision.

Yep well spotted. My bad, put the wrong conversion in the brackets. Anyway, still no closer to a descision.

I never leave home without mine. It's great peace of mind knowing it's there if needed.
