06-08 997 or newer 991..

Hi Guys,
First my apologies in advance if I didnt word that right...I am not too familiar with all iterations of the 997 ie I dont know the diff between 997.1 and 997.2 but anyway I digress..

Here is my dilemma..I recently purchased a new 335 sedan for the wife..anyway the car payment is pretty steep..it will be paid off in a few years...if I go for an older 911 (06 to 08 'S') I can probably buy next year..however if I wait 3 more years the 335 will be paid off and I can buy if not new then a year old 911 - Non S.

So while I like the look from '05 to '11 (pre-991) I find it is slightly outdated (more so the '05s)..I really like the look of the new 991 but then I have read some opinions that the 991 is not as raw and it has lost some of the appeal that a older 911 had..

So I am looking for some opinions b/c I cannot judge as have I neither. Also the 911 is such a classic vehicle that I want to purchase it ONCE and keep it. Buying and selling cars are a bug headache and lost of $$.. So I would rather get what I want once..for example I wont be racing it so in a 991 I would not get a 'S' whereas used I would..

anyway I hope my posting is clear..I am so impatient for this car but like I said I would rather wait if the opinion is that the 991 is way better..

thx!

If you have to wait to buy a 997.1 C2S and you wanted a 991 you would be waiting maybe 3 or 4 more years. Wait a year or two and get a 997.2 C2s.

Another classic piece of advise would be to go test drive both models. We can tell you this model or that but it will be somewhat based on our personal likes/dislikes, not yours. Only seat time in both cars will ultimately help your decision.

That said, I personally will be "settling" (if you can call it that) for a 997.1 C2 or C2S in 2 years, rather than waiting 5 to get a GT3 or Turbo model. My thinking is I would rather be driving a great Porsche sooner than later. I can always upgrade down the road if I really want to. Again though, your thinking seems different as you want to buy and hold.

Either way you cant make a bad choice! Best of luck with the decision and make sure to share pics once you buy the beauty

997.2 models cover MY 2009-2012. The 997.2 engines are different than the 997.1 series. 997.2 has DFI, and as a result more HP and less fuel consumption. For your comparison 997 vs 991, I really think the decision would be 997.2 vs 991. That at least tries to level the other features of the car - like PCM 3 with touch screen Nav, Bluetooth, etc...

Thx Scoper, that comparison sounds about right. So would you say then that the 997.2 with DFI are better than the 997.1? That's what I am trying to ascertain.

And the 997.1 cars could have IMS issues down the road. That is the deal breaker for me.

Yes, if you compare apples to apples, i.e.,

997.1 C2 < 997.2 C2
997.1 C2S < 997.2 C2S

However, I felt that the 997.1 C2S is about the same HP wise as 997.2 C2.

But it isn't all about just HP, you've got the other parts of the car to consider - LED taillights, the PCM upgrades I mentioned, etc. Plus you also have to take into account the red brakes that come with the S models (would be a consideration if you plan to track the car).

Hope that makes sense.

From what I recall, IMS issues were isolated to 2005 and some 2006.

Yes that makes sense...see in Ontario (Canada) if we get caught driving 50km over the speed limit you can get a fine of $10K right there at the side of the road - the cop is Judge and Jury so there is no point having a 300hp+ car..I can't drive my 335 to even close to where it's capable of..but all those things you mentioned make sense for a 997.2 C2S..oh yes even the RED brakes

EDIT: I can see yours is a 997.2. I love it from the Avatar..I am gonna do a search to see if I can find more pics..

I'd go with the 997.2 like everyone else here suggests. Good Luck and don't wait too long.......nothing like a 911!!

OP - its largely an efficient market out there for 997.1, .2 and 991 (i.e., you get what you pay for, so no need to stress about the best "value". Test drive as many as you can and be honest with your budget, factoring for maintenance and repairs.
