Possible coolant leak from cap?

My car is a 997.2 - 2009 S model.

I did a search for coolant leaks and read many of the posts. However...I recently had my HFP replaced and during the process they had to drain the coolant system and refill. Prior to that, I never had a coolant leak. Now, after a drive on a hot day...when I park the car in the garage I see a few drips collecting on the HFP area of the engine. After seeing this a few times, I traced it upwards and it appears that the coolant tank cap could be the culprit, allowing the coolant to come out, into the "catch" area of the coolant tank, then runs down the overflow tube and collects on the HFP under the car.

Has anyone else seen this or had this problem? What about coolant tank caps...anyone had issues with these?

Thank you!

marlon 997 is infamous around these parts
My 997.1 had a cracked coolant tank a couple of months ago. My car is a 2006, so a little bit older.

I haven't had a problem with mine. I had the HPFP done in mid Feb. Around two weeks later, I purchased the upgraded coolant tank cap even though the prior .03 cap had shown no problem. I am assuming you're seeing dried pink residue around the cap which is making you believe it's the cap? If so, just go and buy the .04 cap and you'll most likely be good to go. Hopefully the problem isn't more sinister than that.

By the way, you said you did a search on coolant leaks, but you then finished by asking a question. The answer is YES, others HAVE had a problem. Here is the thread, and why I bought the .04 cap. Make sure you put that sucker on snug!

Sometimes it is the cap and (I believe) more often it is hairline cracks in the reservoir itself. The cap is the cheaper change to make first.

I would SERIOUSLY doubt you'd be seeing hairline cracks in the tank of a ~ 3 year old car. Not saying it can't happen given the frequent temp changes as was discussed in a prior thread, but if you are seeing crusty fluid around the cap, you know where the problem is.

+1. There is a TSB on replacing the cap. You're on your own to buy one though.

It's the cap. I had the same problem like countless more before me. It's a warranty replacement, won't cost a dime. Just make sure they install the latest version of the cap, tighten it good and you will be done. I made a long thread on it a while back.

I had same issue the first week I bought my car... I first got the updated cap and then drove the car a week and let the whole system settle as far as the coolent level. Left it at proper mark on the coolent tank and it never leaked again. The car has to be on level ground when you check the level, I know this sounds obvious but the slightest bit off and you may overfill the tank which again will cause it to vent (or leak)...

In my case it was the cap. New cap under warranty. Problem solved.

Thanks everyone for the updates and advise. I'm taking it into the dealership soon, and wanted to have all the pertinent info prior to my visit.
Thanks again for all the help. Everyone on here is awesome.

I'll advise what gets changed as soon as I get the car back from the service appointment.
