Help With Cup Holder Alternatives
I'm looking for something aftermarket to put my coffee cup in during the daily commute. The OEM holder scares me.
I'm thinking something placed on the passenger floor, not too big, but stable enough to not fall over during turns or accelerations. It could be easily moved to the rear when I have a passenger.
I bought a generic holder from Autozone but of course the coffee cup fell over on the first turn. Fortunately the lid prevented any mess.
Any recommendations or links to something that works?

I've had no issues with the stock cup holders that could be addressed by another solution. The only spillage was from taking a turn where the forces pushed the coffee out of the sipping slot in the lid. I need to drive slower or drink more of the coffee first or get a sealing cup. But then I've only moved cups about 6 times in about 2.5 years, so I'm no heavy user of the technology.

I took a section of closed cell foam and wrapped it around my favorite water bottle, taped it to seal and velcroed it to the passenger side foot well left side. It's handy, out of the sun, does not block the AC vents and will not tip over. Not the most attractive but it's hidden in that location and not noticable.
I just order one too. Neat idea, my daughter sits in the back and I am wondering if the seat will hit it when we put it forward for her to get in and out. For $20, its worth trying. For the dash cup-holders, I always flip the metal back up when the holder is out as it adds stability. I also point the sip hole toward the dash and stick one of the little green Starbucks spill tabs in the sip hole. You can grab a handful of the green spill preventors when you are in Starbucks.
The stock cupholder is very effective. It can accomodate a large range of container sizes and disappear when not needed. I have had the noted problem of coffee flowing out of the cup under lateral acceleration & had to replace stained floormats once because of this. Good luck finding anything better.
So, you're okay with reaching down to the passenger floorboard just to satisfy your coffee habit?
Totally unsafe in any traffic. I have no cup holders in mine and I'm fine with that. The link in the second post has been around for a long time and seems to work (and it will keep you from digging around the floorboards).

The OEM cup holders are not bad but the lid after repeated use is a terrible design! Mine no longer closes. I've read through some threads and there seems to not be a fix other than to replace the entire unit which is ridiculous. Just FYI.
