...for late model 996 and 997 models, how would you go about finding a manufacturer that would be interested in producing it? IMHO, it would be relatively easy to produce (mold), could be produced in a variety of materials from standard to exotic (i.e. carbon fiber), could be installed by a good DIY'er with a minimum of tools or modification of factory parts and pieces. I think the item I have in mind would appeal to someone (like me) that would like to add some GT3 styling to their late model 996 or 997 without the expense of swapping out major body panels.
You research it and make sure there's no competition. If not, submit your design and file for a patent. Protect your idea PRIOR to discussing it with anyone. Then start sourcing manufacturer's who make items like your idea - plastic, aluminum, rubber.... and get general production costs so you can see if there's a price point that you can make money at. Then get started with your trade mark, corporate name, web site, production schedule, non-compete contracts. Oh, did I say get a manufacturer's lawyer. There are lawyers who specialize in manufacturing and have contacts with foreign factories. Once you get some made start test marketing. You will have to drive demand by selling small quantities to vendors who will sell them and want more or do a fair amount of advertising.

I'd partner with an Industrial designer with auto experience that can turn your idea into reality and to create a working prototype. It's tough to sell "ideas" as opposed to actual product.
That will give you a verifiable claim should someone abscond with your idea...
No need to do all that official stuff just yet...take your idea reduce it to a piece of paper, technical drawing, description etc. then put it in an envelope and mail it to your self, registered/sealed.

make your own prototype piece... paint it and install it. take professional pictures and sell that to the manufacturers. It's too difficult to sell an idea on paper... unless is an awesome idea that will bring millions to the industry.
