Oh NOOOO! Not another oil thread!
Oh NOOOO! Not another oil thread!
Ok..well maybe a small one. I need to do an oil change and I'll be damned if I'll pay the astronomical price they ask for something that simple. Only problem is, the proper oil and filters don't seem to be readily available. Here is what I have it narrowed down to.
Mobil 1 0w-40 (all I've read says this is not exactly the best choice but it's cheap and available locally at Wal-Mart)
Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra 5w-40 (The platinum is what is in there now from a dealer change and I can only find it online form Amazon)
Mobil 1 5w-50 (Supposed to be really good and available online and on sale now...is it too heavy for the mild winters we have in Tennessee?)
What say you all?

Order the filter and crush washer from Suncoast or Sonnen. Link below is for the 997.2. I changed mine last weekend for ~$110.00. Got the oil (Mobil 1 0-40) from Autozone.

All you need (oil, filters, crush washers, etc.) is readily available on the WWW. You'll pay competitive prices and it'll be delivered right to your door. Just do some basic 'google' work and you find it all.
I use Castrol Edge Syntec 5w-40 is Porsche approved, rated at -40 C, and can often be found on sale. I get mine at by the case for about $ 6.50 a QT at AutoZone but am sure the other parts stores carry it or it's equivilent . Mobil 1w-40 works equally well and is rated at -43 C. As for oil filters, I buy mine 3 at a time from Suncoast. Which oil is best ? just pick an oil that's Porsche approved and you'll be fine.
I'll chime in with my $.02. I typically change the oil in the driveway - you can find threads to help, but it's just like any other oil change except:
1. THe drain plug is in the back
2. 8.5 quarts of oil comes out FAST. Buy a larger oil catch pan with a big opening, and consider a huge funnel as well.
As for oil, I've recently changed my tune a bit... I always used Mobil 1, but brought the car to the dealer this spring because I had a minor warranty issue. While it was there I figured I'd let them do the oil. They charged a fortune, and I ended up with Castrol. I was initially pissed! But then I started reading and decided maybe Mobil 1 isn't the best oil after all.
Since then, I've done a track day where I pushed the car extremely hard in 95 degree temps. The car did well, but oil temps were high - 265+. I decided I should get the oil out of there because it was allowed to get so hot. I ended up going with Motul 8100 Xcess oil. LN Engineering recommends it for the high heat, high stress conditions on the track, and it's Porsche approved. I did another track day last weekend. Air temps were much lower so it's not apples to apples, but the oil temps stayed 30 degrees lower. And I'm pushing the car quite hard on the track - about as hard as you can push it with stock suspension and tires.
I found the oil for around $8/quart on Amazon, but I had to buy a bunch of it. I've got enough for 2+ oil changes.
Just another data point for you to help make it confusing. That said... general consensus is, use ANY Porsche approved oil, change it more frequently than what Porsche recommends (at LEAST once per year), and you'll be fine.

buy an OEM Filter, and you will need a wrench to get the filter housing off. I bought the OEM one, as I don't want to crack the plastic filter housing and have to buy a new one.
As for oil, as long as it is on there approved list, then use it. There are a number of DIY threads for these cars on the internet, and it is easy to do...just time consuming as it takes a while to drain all the oil.

why $110... two 5 qt Mobil oil jugs at walmart = about $50. ($25 each),
oil filter was not much (don t have exact price).. maybe $30 shipped at most, crush ring .25 cents.
Just curious.

Autozone didn't have the 5 qt containers, so I bought 8 qts at $8/qt. Oil filter is around ~$28 and the plug and crush washer is ~$5. I normally replace the plug each time since it is aluminum. I don't want to fight with a stripped oil pan plug. Then there is the beer I drank and the movie I watched waiting for the oil from the pan to quit dripping...

LOL

O I see, you changed the plug and washer. I just changed the washer.
Still beats $500 at the dealer.

NorthVan You are correct and should always use Genuine Porsche Oil Filter Wrench like the one shown below to avoid failure.
Yea, it's cheap insurance. You don't have to replace the plug, but I do it anyway. I've fought stripped bolts and plugs before, its not fun.

ECS- question. Are the 997.2 and 997 caps and cap wrenches different? Mine has a 36MM nut (if i remember correctly) on the top of the cap (997.2)... The pic you showed is for a 997.1? My dealer told me to just use the socket right on the top of the cap nut... Look at the pics in my link.
