rod antenna removal? (shorter version found!!)

i have a 997.2 c2s with rod antenna installed on the front right fender. is there a way to remove this hideous looking thing? it seems like the rod portion of the antenna may be screwed off from the base. is there anything such as a short stub like a sat antenna to replace the rod portion or must i get a new fender?

You can have it filled an repainted that would be a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new fender and having that painted! On the cheap, a bumper plug lol.Good luck!

I have one on my roof and I used a small snub to replace it. I do like the idea of a bumper plug but they don't make one for it. I checked.

Here's a link to where you can get one. I had it on my E46 M3 'Vert and kept a spare which is now on the 997. I have the smallest one they make.

You're welcome, and yes it fits. I had a spare from the M3 and mounted it to the rubber antenna base - just screws right on.

I'm not sure if you can tell but it's pretty small - unfortunately, the rubber base is quite a bit larger as you know - but this is a huge improvement.

one more post til i can pm...

hi, sorry to bother you again but i have a question to ask you about the size of the hole in the replacement piece.

i went to pepboys last night since they had a mast replacement that looked like the ones in the link you've posted. however, when i tried to screw them on the base, it would'nt fit because the hole is much smaller than the threaded bolt on the base.

the threaded bolt on the base seems twice as big in diameter than the hole in the replace piece. if i had to guess, i would say the diameter on the base bolt is little less than an inch and the hole in the replacement piece is approximately half that size.

is there any way you can check the size of the hole in your replacement antenna please? i want to make sure it'll fit before i can order it online. i hope we have the same type of antenna. tia

All Porschefiles should have a great body shop. I would take it to my shop and have them advise me. I can't imagine anyone putting such a thing on a fender.

Talking temporary solution

Finally!!! After searching all over internet to find a compatible stubby antenna for my car, a man from an antenna manufacturing company suggested a brand that might work. And it did!!

It's an oem replacement stubby for older model SL's and SLK's. This piece actually fits perfectly without any gap and unlike the ones on ebay, they are functional as well.

There are two versions:

Mercedes Benz Part#

170 820 06 75 (one I bought and shorter than one below).

171 820 20 75 (twice the length and better material but seemed too long).

I paid almost double the price at the MB dealership compared to a MB online parts store but I had to make sure that it was the right size&fit and once it was confirmed it just stay on the car lol.

Until I decide to fill in the hole and repaint the fender, this will do for the time being.

I thought I pay my share of contribution to 6speed and who knows someone just might find a AM/FM rod antenna on their porsche.

Didn't the post right before yours (number 11) provide a solution and a source?

Thanks for the reply.
Yes and no!
Yes in that respect that pictures tell that there is hopw! Lol
No, from that respect that the part numbers show the same damn long prehistoric antenna!
I was hoping to find a shorter onr or something as short as the one on top of the carrera, but even couldnt find those links working!
So, any link helps because i have been searching now for two days and cant find any match!
Any help will be much appricciated!
