Battery Question
Battery Question
Hi all,
Long story short, the battery in my 911 is completely dead....past the point the of being able to jump it. I was going to just order a new battery through my parts department(because of my car's low mileage, it's not covered under warranty), but they told me that they would have to reset some things in the car's computer. Is this true? Is it possible to replace it myself and then just bring it over to them after to have them look through it?
I know I have free towing through my warranty/Porsche roadside assistance, but the car is in a parking garage and tow trucks are too large to get in......I also don't trust the 3rd party they use for roadside assistance down here(I've had poor experiences in the past).
Thanks in advance,
Stephen

haha I've seen posts in other threads telling people to be careful about doing that.
Nothing wrong with walmart just make sure its the right size for your model. Payed 250 from dealer that was the first and last time. Had my walmart battery for 3 years now fires up all day long
I don't think you need to reset anything after a battery change. I would not buy a Porsche battery as they are not that great.
Walmart battery works just fine and seems to be the lowest priced around. Be sure to connect the small vent tube when installing the new one. There should be a small hold on the side of the battery. Just reuse the hose and connector that is currently on your car.

The new battery is larger but the hold down fits just fine, though in a different hole one position further to the left of where it fit before.
Anyhow, after you do the battery R&R -- follow the proper battery disconnect/reconnect steps! -- you'll probably have to reset the window limits and re-cal the e-Gas.
For window limits consult your owners manual. For my cars it is using the lower button lower the window completely. Release the button. Then press and hold the raise button leaving it pressed 5 seconds after the window reaches the top of its travel.
For the e-Gas turn off the key then turn on the key and leave in the on position 60 seconds. Do *not* touch the gas pedal. Turn the key off. Leave off 10 seconds. Turn the key back on and then to engine start. Re-cal done.
There may be some low battery error codes stored but these should clear after a trip or two. Ditto the steering angle sensor warning light. In the case of my Turbo the old battery wasn't completely dead and I managed to get the old battery out and the new one in before the system lost its marbles...
Be sure the new battery is secure! Be sure the vent hose is connected and secure!
I think Wal-Mart changed designation to H7 (same as Interstate), It's an exact fit - no need to use any alternative hold down hole. Also, has an outlet to reconnect the vent tube. I've changed batteries on 997's multiple times and the only resetting I had to do was to turn the sterring wheel a couple of times to make the PSM warning light go away and reset the windows using procedure others have mentioned. Nothing else - even my clock and radio stations stayed the same. Not sure what posts you read that mentioned problems. Battery change to an aftermarket will be the easiest job you've accomplished...plus you get a battery with a real warranty. Just be careful not to strain your back when you're lifting the battery out.
I bought a BOSCH from Costco for my 997.1 S cab' - car was without a battery for more than a day and I didn't need to reset anything other than the clock - I'm sure you can do that! I had 2 size options , Bosch S5007 =278mm long/74AH/750cca and Bosch S5010 = 315mm long/85AH/800cca . You should only need the larger if you live in a really cold climate or do lots of very very short journeys. I went for the smaller even though typical journey is only 15 minutes and have not had a problem.
+1. This is definitely a DIY. Bring core w/you to Walmart. Codes will clear when you drive. Only thing that's not 100% back to normal is my iPod connection. GL.
