Track Modification, Advice Needed

Guys,

I am coming from a bmw with coils/camber plates, sway bars, control arms, Brembo's, etc so am finding the 997 less than exciting in the handling department thus far. I am considering doing some mods and wanted to see what the consensus is on what parts. I have read through dozens of threads but haven't found a concrete plan yet. The only mod I have now are springs which the car came with.

I am thinking of doing:
1. Coilovers
2.Rear Toe Arms (Torque Solutions)
3.Rear Dogbone kit (Torque Solutions)
4. GT3 front control arms (OEM)
5. Sway bars (???)
6. Alignment/corner balance
7. Tires (18" ???)
8. GT3 Brake Ducts F/R
9.Track Pads (???)
10. MORE DE'S

Thanks for the advice!

Hi there.

1. Stock PASM is fine for track in sport mode!
2. Not required, you want about 30 minutes toe in on the rear (0.15 each side), the stock suspension can give this.
3. No idea
4. A must to get that additional front camber, aim for -2.0ish negative front camber, will need approx 10-12mm shims either side, don't go above 14mm either side as that will reduce life of the arms fast.
5. GT3 front sway, set on softest or soft. Rear use GT3 gen1 bar set to middle or stiffest, the gen2 GT3 bar aka GT2 bar is too stiff for a Carrera and will give you too much oversteer. Or as an alternative the C4S bars are thicker than C2S bars on rear.
6. YES YES YES! Aim for -2.0 front negative camber, 0.01 toe in on each side front, approx 8.50 caster and for rear about -1.8 negative camber and 0.15 tie in on each side rear.
7. 18" or 19" is fine, just ensure wide, so 245 front, 305 rear!
8. Absolute must for the front, GT3 ducts fit fine and are cheap, rears not so important but a good idea and a little more.
9. Pagid RS29's simples!
10. Yes and tuition/training!

Hope that helps, done pretty much the above to mine and it drives awesome, I shall post some videos up if you wish of mine on track?

Coming from a BMW you've got to keep in mind you're in a TOTALLY different type of car now, especially in the handling department. The 911 platform is much more involved (and subsequently more rewarding) but is also much harder to get the most of out. Properly set up BMW's are very easy to drive fast to, and over the limit, 911's will bite you much harder much more quickly.

So in terms of your suspension, it depends on quite a few things like, how much coaching you've had behind the wheel of your 911 and how many track days you've got under your belt behind a 911. Also how many track days are you looking to do a year?

If none of that matters and you just wanna mod

1. Bilstein are a great road/track compromise that is compatible with PASM. If you wanna go big $$$ go Moton, JRZ or pretty much anything with remote reservoirs.
2. Take all the neoprene out of the front and rear and do RSS LCA's, dog bones, toe links with locking plates and solid engine mounts. Taking the soft rubber out will noticeably help keep the car more planted and dog bones/toe links will help your car keep its alignment, help eliminate bump steer and keep the correct geometry if you lower the ride height.

Here's a write up from pro driver Leh King about the aforementioned

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...cs-plenty.html

Contact board sponsor Mike at RSS or Alex as Sharkwerks. Both are SUPER knowledgeable guys who are awesome to work with. And both will not sell you anything you dont need.

3. Definitely do F & R adjustable sways as Gibbo mentioned and set the camber, toe, etc up as he mentioned as well. Also do drop links while you're in there

4. Tires, again depend on your driving experience with the 911 platform. Michelin PS2's or PSS's are great to start on. From there I'd go Nitto NT01's, then to Michelin Pilot Sport Cups to Hoosiers.

5. Brake ducts, as previously mentioned are a must.

6. In terms of pads I personally like Endless and PFC

Good luck! Be careful, the hill is steep!

good advice on the set up but c'mon people, where is the safety? more mods = higher G's and speed. no discussion of/encouragement for safety??

invest in roll bar, HANS, seats and harnesses if you dont already have.

The OP was specific on what he wanted advice on. And the reality is, most people who only do a handful of track days a year aren't willing to run race seats, a bar, 5/6 point and a HANS.

but not so fast on the 2nd part. #10 - "MORE DE's" - begs the question of safety (i.e. instead of spending money on just performance mods) so i thought i'd chime in with the obvious.
