Ghost of racetracks past
Ghost of racetracks past
Beautifully weather today and some of the guys wanted to take a ride. We ended up here, where my interest in motorsports started. Unfortunately this is about all that is left. I spent many a day flying under this bridge, what a shame.
One the truly great racers track. Very sad it is no longer around. Broke my collar bone as well as a rib there in 1978 aboard a Triumph Trident front straight into one. The corner workers used to have a broom to sweep away the sand on the track. From the time you entered the track, you had sand somewhere on you. The bathrooms were a bit grungy.
Karl B haven't been out there in years, is that all that is left of the track?

I heard it was a golf course or housing subdivision now...is that correct? I have looked for it on Google Earth...but can't seem to locate the exact spot.
I raced there a few times a long time ago too. A WERA endurance race, and a few sprint races with guys like Mike Baldwin, Dan Sorenson, Frank Mrazek, etc.

This is Bridgehampton, all that is left is the front straight and the downhill just before the kink, then it is an access road for the golf course, and the housing development.
I had not been there for about 10 years, it is amazing how built up it is around the track. There are many large houses that are reasonably new, many for sale.
They still hold a historic car weekend in Bridghampton, but I boycott going, lots of history on Long Island but the weekend NYC crowd killed it. Now we have vineyards, wineries, and horrific weekend traffic.

Wow haven't been there in maybe 15 years. It was wild seeing all the huge homes where there was nothing but farms all around you on the way to the track. I guess it's even worse now. Progress??
BTW for the benefit of the folks who don't know, this was a major track that held races from NASCAR to CanAm to open wheel. With names like Gurney, Andretti, Rodriguez, Hall, Surtees, Donohue, Follmer and so many others. It was truly a racers track.
