scored cylinder ?Need help/advise
Hello
I need some help and advice.
I took my 05 carrera 997 3.6 into local shop to take a look at what i thought was a noisy lifter. I get a ticking sound coming from my engine on the passenger side of engine bay.I also get a little bit of soot build up on my driver side exhaust tip. and car seems to be consuming alot of oil.
after taking look at the car the shop diagnosed that all the lifters are fine. and they pulled the coils off each one of the cylinders one by one. when they pulled coil off of cylinder 4 and 5 on bank 2 the noise stopped. they are thinking could possibly be scored cylinder walls.they were going pull plugs and put camera in to each cylinder to inspect walls Has anyone heard of this being common issue in 997 3.6 and if the walls ares scored does anyone have any idea of what the repair would consist of? and what kind of cost i would be looking at? any onfo would help and be greatly appreciated. this is my 1st porsche and i really love the car has been a dream to always own one.. hopefully does not turn into a nigtmare

Have them scope it before jumping to conclusions. Hartech in the UK have a lot of info on their website about it:
http://www.hartech.org/porsche_996_9...on_faults.html
I think there was a pdf that describes the scoring process and why bank 2 is usually the problem child. Oh here it is:
http://www.hartech.org/docs/buyers%2...20part%202.pdf
Edit... not sure if that is the pdf that talk about the bore scoring. Check here: http://www.hartech.org/porsche_996_9...ers_guide.html
Their is a lot of info to filter through. Also search this forum for more info, I think someone posted what page it was on before.

so i ended up taking my car into dealership that i had purchased it from and they did a full diagnostics and scoped the cylinder. 2 of my cylinders were badly scored. they pulled my rev history off the car and seen that there was no possible way that i could have over reved my engine that many times in the short time that i ha owned . they agreed with me that some how this car had slipped thru the cracks with there inspection, and all they said was that they would go to bat for me with porsche on the remedy. after 4 months of me stressing about it. and the local dealership having correspondence back and forth with porsche canada and porsche in the mother lad they surprisingly came up with what i thought was a fair solution (seeing i decided to not get the warranty they offered when purchased the used car)
Porsche in Germany is covering 1/3 or engine replacement. the local dealership is covering 1/3 or engine replacement.. and i will pick up the last 1/3 of engine replacement cost. so basically i am looking at a 8-10 g bill for complete replacement of my 3.6.
not exactly a bill i planned for, but it is nice to see a car company and a dealership take responsibility of a situation and actually be fair in the treatment of there customer. this situation truly was make it or break it for me with porsche.. that being said i'll do my very best to drive porsche for the rest of my life.. in fact i doing a deal on a cayenne with the dealership right now for a car for my girlfriend. i gave them opportunity to recoup there cost on engine job. and i trying to show my loyalty to porsche and to the dealership it self.
ps. i will be buying the extended warrenty they offer on the cayenne ! i learned my lesson.
one happy, fair treated ,Porsche customer for life
special Thanks to Paul at Victoria Porsche in canada for all of his hard work in helping me with this matter

The other way to look at this is that Porsche is aware of this devastating issue in affected models and should have recalled/replaced these motors. At the very least they should cover 100% of cost of this repair when there is a failure. A 10k$ bill to replace a flawed motor is still scary to me and pi$$es me off more than a little.
