Cranking or Grinding sound on 2010 C4S

On a record breaking day, 4degF, I had take my weekend ride out for a short errand.

When backing out, I heard very loud cranking noise from my wheels while steering. I heard that this can happen when tires are cold.

but, why?

Any other explanation? E.g., alignment? (Just bought CPO 4 months ago)

Thx!

Hard to diagnose without hearing in person or sound clip.

Is it all the time, one time, intermittent?

FYI, I get a one-time sound when backing out every morning "the following day after washing my car/wheels". The brakes seem to need to release after every wash.

Hopefully, this sound is what you are having.

Cold tires have little grip especially on cold roads. At acute steering angles the tires will slide and bounce rather than roll, causing pogoing and suspension noise. Btw, cold summer performance tires on roads at these temps require restraint and good judgement. Traction on acceleration steering and braking is impaired in general. Take care.

Is it maybe the same as a four wheel drive vehicle does when the wheels are turned to the extreme. Wife's C4 does the same thing when backing with wheel turned to the limit and it sounds like the FJ cruiser or the Tacoma do under same circumstance.

Yes. Sharp turning radius, wide tires, cold. There must be 2 dozen threads on this. Just back off on steering angle when you feel it start to push or slide. No problem.

Thank you. If I install all season / winter tires, would this noise be lessen?

Or, cold tires on cold road will make this noise regardless of tire type? Need to know whether I need to invest on winter tires ... Thx!

If you are going to seriously winter drive you should invest in proper tires. talk to the guys at Tire Rack for advice. You will have less problems, especially in snow. You probably will still be able slip the front wheels if you crank steering too hard from a stop but it will be less of a problem. You will be much safer which is really what is important. Winter tires have different rubber that works better when cold, different thread design and are narrower. Most that switch tires buy inexpensive wheels w tires mounted and swap for winter. Whether you need to or not depends on how much you will drive and how you will drive. Just saying that the noise itself is not really the problem. Do a search on this forum and get more information on winter tire setup.

No. I have Pirelli Sottozero II's for my winter set up ( dedicated wheels) and they still pop at high steering angles when moving in reverse but they are excellent on winter roads. Don't bother with All Season Tires. They are not recommended, by anyone, for a 911 because they suck in summer and winter driving when it comes to traction on wet and dry pavement, road noise and driving comfort. Best to get proper winter tires for your Porsche or get an SUV for driving when temps are below 40 degs. IMHO

LOL. Well I do agree with you and will endeavor to read any future posts I feel compelled to respond to more closely. Gave you a rep point for being of the same mind as me on this subject and for your trouble.
