RMS Leak Advice

I have a 2005 997 CS with 34K miles. I had a major service last December and was told it has a stage 2 RMS leak. They quoted 1,800 to fix it. I don’t see any oil under the car or on the floor and I have never had to add oil or had any warning lights come on and oil pressure always looks perfect. I am looking for some input on what to do.

Should I do it now with my spring oil service or wait until it gets worse or starts to affect oil consumption? How risky would it be to wait?

What other preventive repairs would you recommend while the engine is out? I hear they water pump can cause a lot of trouble when the impeller blades go bad. No metal in the (LN spin on) oil filter as far as I know. IMS bearing is hopefully OK.

Any advice would be appreciated

$1,800 for RMS??? That seems mighty steep. I'd get a second opinion. Is, "they," the dealer? If so, find a a reputable independent if not find a different independent.

I paid $2,400 for clutch, RMS and LN Engineering IMS retro.

$1800 is okay if it includes a new clutch! Otherwise find someone else who isn't trying to send their kids to college just on one customer.

Wait until you need the clutch, then do it. Fixing it now when you are not seeing evidence of leak and replacing a clutch you don't need at the same time because, well just because, makes no sense. RMS leak is a minor annoyance at most. Get a grip man

PS: no need to drop engine for water pump.

+1

Unlike a breaking dam, RMS leak will be gradual. However, do what you feel comfortable living with.

Thanks for your comments, waiting makes more sense. The quote was from Midwest Eurosport in Bensenville (outside of Chicago). Any suggestions for well qualified independent shops in Chicago?

I had the same RMS leak, I had it fixed under warranty, was quoted $1,500. If I didn't have warranty, I would probably just wait until I needed a new clutch. It's no big deal.
