Key Differences between 997.1 and 997.2. Engines
I'm looking for some help in clarifying the major differences between the engine on my bother's '06 C4S Cab and my '10 C4S Cab.... Looking to settle a bit of a friendly (sibling) rivalry! I believe that the .1 engine was actually a non-Porsche engine design while the .2 engine was completely reengineered and designed by Porsche with fewer and lighter materials and with the introduction of DFI. Have I got that right, or am I missing some major pieces of the story here?
Can you guys help me out with the actual history on this? I need to get my facts straight before I start talking smack. Not that I'm competitive or anything....

Both are Porsche designs. The 997.1 has an intermediate shaft and port injection. It is also an open deck design using Lokasil cast in cylinder liners. The bearing case is separate and serviceable. I has an air injection system used to reduce emissions on startup. The 997.2 does not have an intermediate shaft, has a closed deck design and the main bearings are not, to my understanding, serviceable. I also understand the water pump is more accessible. It also does not use cast in liners but rather, Nikasil surfaces. The use of a high pressure fuel pump and direct injection eliminates the need for an air injection system. I am sure I have forgotten something. Perhaps others can add/correct.
Make sure it was serviced properly ( with records), it looks like it was taken care of and get a good PPI.
Funny, that's what I call my two male siblings ... on purpose!

997.2 engine/drivetrain design addresses some of the weaknesses in teh 997.1 engine/drivetrain design. It also adds a bit more power and makes oil changes a slight bit easier (no special filter cap removal tool for example). But knowing how the car was cared for is always more important.
There are some key things to look for in a 997.1 - make sure an inspection carefully examines issues in those areas. 997.2 may well have its own, new issues - but none are known yet, beside the early high pressure fuel pump problem, which I think has been resolved, so all you need there is validate the recall/replacement has been performed on the pump.

HA - I suppose that's either a Freudian slip on my part OR very impressive sense of humor from my iPad's spell checker!
