The 997.1 was my first 911. It was base with sport chrono and MT. The suspension was really stiff. There were a lots of clunks and rattles when going over even mild road imperfections. The engine was loud even with stock exhaust. It was not comfortable to drive at normal speeds. So I tended to push the car a lot as when I did, all this mechanical noise combined with athletic type of performance... It was orgasmic. This car was raw and I felt that I was inside a rabid animal. What an experience. Life changing.

That is why after selling due to tickets, it was like going through an intense withdrawal and this feeling would not end. Until that is I got the 997.2. The anticipation was so high. I felt like a little kid.

When the moment came and I climbed in and started driving, in my mind, I was waiting for that raw feeling to come out of the car. But it never did. The newer model was S with PASM. The ride was really comfortable. The exhaust was muted. Such a quite cabin without rattles. I felt very strange... I finally got back into a 911 but what happened to all that crazy mad sensation...

The 997.2 is growing on me now and I am falling in love again. But for different reasons than the ones that the 997.1 gave to me...
Yes, the stock exhaust including the PSE on the .2 sucks and affects how the whole car is perceived. You can easily fix that with an after market system though. Plenty to choose from. Neither one brings back the rattles in the cabin but the sound is pretty close to a .1.

Thanks for the feedback. I've read countless threads on the whole 997.1 s vs 997.2 s debate and I'm still undecided on which way to go.

on top of that....I was considering the 4s and so that's an additional factor to complicate things.

I think you are 100% right about an aftermarket exhaust...

If it is your first 911, just get one that you fancy. You will be instantly addicted. The problem is if you had an older model and then go to a newer generation, you may be let down in some ways.

There is nothing like a 911...

no doubt wookimdc , your new car is a better driver with better electronics and the s version. but that yellow car- sexy. i'm not a big fan of yellow. But looking at those two side by side? without hesitation, i'm taking the keys to the 997.1.

I don't think so. Spent $3K on an aftermarket exhaust for my .2 and it didn't sound near as good as PSE. It definitely added power though.

But between the base or S version... I love the S. The improved ride is well worth the extra money and the extra power is a bonus. Only thing is if you will get the .2, you should really think of finding one with PSE. Especially if you previously owned a .1 gen...
Agree, although I had PASM on both the .1 S and .2 S. PASM in the .2 is better as it's softer comparatively in both settings so you get a more compliant ride and better bump absorption. A suspension needs to travel to work. But I'm not a big fan of PASM as it doesn't account for both high and low frequency bumps, which can be encountered simultaneously. It's cool because it stiffens each corner independently based on what the car is doing, but still it doesn't know how to let go it you hit a bump while it's in slow fluid mode (charged). I'd much rather have an adjustable suspension for high and low frequency bumps and preload. Therefore KW V3s please. Plus you can control ride height (preload). I'd set to the maximum height to ensure max suspension travel, which would still be a little lower than a 997 equipped with PASM.

What system did you buy? And you're comparing to PSE on what and in what configuration?

The yellow beast looked so good... I miss it so... The color is actually so good on a 911... Had yellow dials and yellow seat belt straps... Man I miss that car...

You seem to be at a very high level in terms of cars and tracking them. I am a simple man and I cannot be at your level in my lifetime. But I have always loved to drive. As such, I can only know as to what my visceral feelings tell me. Please forgive me if I cannot talk in technical terms. I have sought out this forum in part due to my excitement to be driving a 911 again. To have an outlet for this energy that has been resurrected. My thoughts on this thread is just purely my humble opinion.

Cheers.

Cargraphic super sound export side mufflers (no flaps) and center x-pipe. Definitely louder, but not throaty like PSE. I like the pop-pop you get with PSE under deceleration.

The difference is PASM will cause the outside wheels to bounce off bumps when cornering, where high quality coilovers like KW or Bilstein won't unless you have the compression set too stiff and the rebound set full open, which no one ever would. The point is to absorb bumps, not bounce off of them. That's why setting PASM to stiff is worthless (PASM is always on and active). Makes the wheels bounce off of every road irregularity you encounter.

Ideally you find a 997 without Sport Chrono and retrofit it for the sport plus mode, and mount KW V3s. Or if you have Sport Chrono with PASM, exchange the shocks and springs for Bilstein's PASM coilover. Either way the car will behave far better than stock PASM. Changing suspension bits is something you feel every foot of every mile so it's money well spent.

Both are beautiful cars- I love the Interior of the 997.2 but not a fan of the muted exhaust and i dont like the tail lights either- i had a 997.1 , got a GT3 type rear bumper + LED tails and loved the look....i so miss that car however i just bought a 2002 C4S last week so still happy!

I really never noticed a muted exhaust from my 08 to my 12'. But my neighbors 05 seems louder than mine. I didn't know they muted the exhaust in 09.

I love the look of the GT3 rear bumper too. To be honest, I prefer the shape of the 997.1 rear tail lights more than the 997.2. LEDs are really nice but the way the shape of the lights transitioned from 997.1 to 997.2 looks a little cat like. The shape of the 997.1 rear lights look more dignified in some ways. LED upgrades are easy now a days but the shape...
