how screwed am i?

While taking the kids to work. I was waiting in line at idle. The car started to smoke like crazy. (Looked whitish) too much sun too tell from inside the car. And then it stoped. And now i have oil coming from the exhaust joint.

You'll be fine. Just take it to dealership and utilize your CPO or third party warranty coverage.

Where is that leak? Between the headers and cats, upstream of the cats?

Could be the AOS (air oil separator). They are prone to failure and will put oil where it shouldn't be, causing white exhaust smoke.

And don't despair just yet. An AOS repair is an "easy" engine repair nowhere near the cost of an engine rebuild from cylinder scoring or an IMS failure.

It's also hard to tell from your upside down picture if the leak is in the exhaust pipes or above it. It could be a leak above the exhaust, dripping onto it, burning off causing white smoke.

The car started smoking like crazy while it was in idle and my first thought that it was the air/oil separator.... but the engine died and it wont start (i only tried once) then i saw oil in the (upsidown Pic, sorry) exhasut clamp which is after the cats but before the muffler.

i did check the top and around. it is coming from the exhaust itself.
I'm going to take the plugs out and see if theres any damage. otherwise i'll get a boroscope and try to see the pistons.

Which bank? Fingers crossed it's the AOS because everything else sounds expensive.

it's on the drivers side muffler. so the right side or bank 2.
fingers crossed, it all points to a catastrophic failure of the AOS.

Thanks for your recommendation. I spoke to william, but he left town for a week. I will send him the car next week.

off subject, but have there been any other meet-ups at hooters?

Reads very much like my Boxster's most recent AOS failure. Everything fine. Pulled away from a stop light and just as a matter of routine checked the rear view mirror. Smoke City!

A quick scan of the dash didn't find any warning lights on or any other signs of anything amiss. Engine running ok, too.

Smoking trailed off as I drove down the road, but I knew what was wrong and turned about and headed back towards a nearby dealer.

About a mile later got caught at a long stop light and when I moved off the smoking was even worse and as I drove about a block the engine started to run a bit rough. Decided it was time to call it quits and call a tow truck.

I expect had I continued to run the engine much longer, just idle the engine much longer, it would have died and maybe not restarted. The smoking was quite heavy especially the 2nd time and the engine was running rough.

But in your car's case get a pro's diagnosis. You don't want to throw an AOS at the symptoms when it is something else, obviously.

I think they move the meet to a different place. This Saturday the Miami crew will meet at Parkhous for breakfast.

I'm deeply impressed, even in a time of despair, you were able to inquire about a car meet up at Hooters!
