Intermitten ignition issue

2007 Carrera S Cabrio.
Sometimes, when I insert the key, the car just does...nothing.
Normally, the radio and the airbag light comes on, but every once in a while I get nothing.
New battery and wiring, so thats not the problem.
Any ideas out there??

Does it make a clicking sound? If you pull the key out and reinsert, does the engine start? Have you tried shaking the key while trying to start the engine?

When it happens, there is no click. If I keep inserting the key, eventually it does click and start.
It only happens once in a while and it happens with both of my keys.

I would start with replacing the ignition switch. That probably would be the cheapest and quickest step without going through a bunch of electrical troubleshooting (starter, solenoid, etc.).

If it's not the switch, you can always keep the switch as you'll eventually need it.

How many miles? Do you have a heavy key chain?

Oops! You said new wiring. What "wiring" is new?

i would say ig switch or even more stupid - maybe the key? if batt is dead or chip inside is fried, i've seen others report starting issues.

I was thinking about the batteries also but he said "both keys" do the same thing. Though remote, still possible.

Thanks for the replies.

The battery is brand new. One of the keys is brand new.
The wiring replaced was 6 ignition coils.

Last year I thought one of the dealer techs was talking about replacing the ignition - something behind where you stick the key into...not sure what he meant, but it sounded expensive.

One of the most common electrical items to fail on some of the older Porsche's is the ignition switch. This failure can show up in any number of ways. The car can refuse to start some of the time, the key may not turn too easily in the ignition, or strange electrical problems may appear. Read more about the issue and a DIY fix here at this Tech Article.

We also have ignition switches available on our parts catalog here.

The tech and what I mentioned is the same thing. And yes, it's the one behind where you stick your key in.

I see that PelicanParts also responded. Give them a call and ask how much. I am a long customer of PP but not affiliated.

Electrical issues, especially when intermittent, seem to be the worst to diagnose and fix. Let's hope it is the switch.

is it m6?

had same problem with my 997.2 c4s m6. problem was the clutch switch (don't know what it's really called). sometimes, re-engaging the clutch enabled start, but often no. they replaced the button that gets tripped when the clutch is depressed and the problem went away.

good luck.

I had the same issue with my 2012 997 GTS. Failure of this ignition interlock switch is common.
