TechArt Exhaust

Any info on the TA exhaust?

No one seems to mention it. Its always fabspedd, AWE, or PSE.

Has anyone heard it?

If you look at the Fabspeed website, they show cutaways of several exhausts. I'm sure that they are all about the same. I like the Fabspeed design better but once you see the video on the website you will see why. It's about as free flowing as an exhaust can get. There are no Techart or AWE cutaways there but I would assume that all exhaust designs are about the same with the end goal being to reduce restriction.

That being said, I personally had a Fabspeed on my 996 and having personally installed it, I can tell you that it is by far the best quality exhaust I have seen period. This is referring strictly to the finish and build quality. The seams are perfect, it is perfectly polished and absolutely flawless looking right out of the box. I can't say the same for any of the other exhausts that I have seen. Nothing compares to the manufacturing quality and final finish of the Fabspeed unit. I know that this is by no means a performance criteria but it is representative of the build quality and the quality standards of the company.

As far as Techart, I believe that because it is a Techart exhaust, the price is probably double the price of the Fabspeed or AWE units for no real reason. Therefore, less people have them.

If it weren't for the wife, I would go for a Fabspeed without question. Installation only took me about 30 min/side and I could probably cut that down to 20 min/side if I had used a pneumatic ratchet.

I have to go for the PSE because I need to have the switch to revert to stock sound. My 2nd attempt at PSE installation is on Mon. Assuming all parts are in this time!

Techart racing sounds sick. the sport version is waste of money imo. highly recommend the racing version.

Arling- How much for the racing version?

2thfxer - I have a good feeling about the fabspeed build quality. However, I don't like the sound much.

Based on a sound clip or in person experience?

Sound clip.
Ah, I'm going to say the obvious here. Don't base your judgement to buy an exhaust on a sound clip. There are way too many variables there. Think of it this way. If you've ever watched an episode of Overhaulin', they almost always do a sound system with subs and tons of power etc. At the reveal, they play the stereo for the person and it always sounds like crap like an AM radio. Well, that's exactly what you are listening to when you hear a sound clip. In fact, I bet that the show uses much better recording equipment than people have used in the past to post sound clips. Most of the time it's just a video camera and that's not even close to sounding realistic. I have been thinking about this myself because I would like to get some accurate before and after sound clips of my car. No matter how well I record it, the end product will be limited by the listener's speakers. Live listening is the only way to go. I would suggest going to Arling's shop and just hanging out there, I'm sure people with various types of exhausts are either getting their cars worked on or will be dropping by. Also, remember that whatever exhaust you get will sound different on a 997 than it does on a 996. Even 996 models prior to 2001 and earlier sound different from 996 models 2002 and later.

Anyways, as far as recording, I have been thinking about this. I have a really nice stereo digital recorder. I could have my son stand about 3-4 feet away from the car and I could blip the throttle or I could actually tape it to the bumper and drive around. I think that either way the clip won't sound right but I'll give it a try.

2thfixr,

What is your opinion of the Fabspeed Moderate vs the Super Sport exhaust. I've been told that even the Moderate is too loud. I know this is all subjective, but what is the best way to decide and what model did you install?

thx, David

Interesting question. On my 996, I had what they call the Fabspeed Powerflo. I think the moderare and supersport may be 996TT exhausts. I think all they have for the 996 is the Powerflo and the straight pipes. Unless those are the two they refer to as the moderate and supersport. My 997S has the PSE. Based on what I can remember, it seems that the PSE is much deeper at idle and stays pretty deep and loud up to about 4000 RPMs then it starts to get a little more higher pitched. So far I really like it and the ability to switch the exhaust to quiet mode is great. It allows me to appreciate the deep roar of the exhaust or the sweet sound of the engine. The best of both worlds IMO.
