Not All Wheels Created Equal - /ENGINEERED

The aftermarket is filled with cool wheels. Some last forever, some crack in your driveway. Why? Our very own, Alan Peltier, explains.

Wrench smarter. Introducing a NEW series on /DRIVE, aimed at educating you to build a faster, better, more reliable car: /ENGINEERED. We want to empower our fellow enthusiasts to know more, and do more, by learning from some of the best engineers in the game.

Nice job, I have been telling people this stuff for years on many forums. Maybe something like this will finally make people understand how this effects their cars.

Not there yet. Frequent threads here and on Rennlist where guys put $1,200 sets of wheels on these cars. I did that too on pre-911 sports cars but wised up. I think you need to spend at least $1,000 per wheel - not for a full set - to get after market wheels that match the rest of a 997's performance and quality.

As good as the HRE presentation was, he didn't mention the difference in the finish between cheap wheels and the more expensive ones. Cheap wheels look great when out of the box but in most cases, the finish will deteriorate quickly. I had a set of HRE P40's on my -09 C4S that I put almost 40,000 miles on and they still looked brand new. (no affiliation)
