New guy????

Greetings,
New to this forum. I've been a car guy for 50 years... comfortable around cars and motors. I can handle routine maintenance but getting deep inside a 911 is beyond me.
I'm thinking hard about a 2009 C2. I've read that a clutch may need replacing around 50,000. I've looked at a lot of 977's with mileage well above 50k and never see a clutch replacement on the carfax. I realize this is dependent on driving style, but still, it scares me.
The car I'm looking at has 47,000 on the clock, one owner, and all recommended service by dealer...documented. What do you think I'll see in the way of maintenance costs in the next 20,000 miles? 40,000 miles?
Damn I want a Porsche

Welcome. You only got me by 10 years or so and I too can do routine service up to say like plugs, brakes etc...
I don t think a clutch is needed that soon unless driven poorly or used as a city taxi. It s possible to burn a clutch out in 5000 miles, LOL. Guys have boasted of 911 s with 100K on one clutch.
Whats coming up depends on what has been done to date. A well documented and serviced car is what I would suggest. Doesn t have to be dealer serviced. Many here do their own and it s just as good. For example; spark plugs, ($700 dealer cost), many including myself have done it for less than $100. Not a simple job but can be done. Brakes pretty simple. Brake flush , simple, oil changes and filter all simple. So if you are unable then I d look for an independent shop that does Porsche.
My car is for sale and unless something breaks won t need anything for 10,000 miles when the oil is due. Take a look and I list the services done already That will give you an idea of a fully up to date serviced car. Maybe even a little overdone, LOL.

Mark,
Thanks for your response. Being new to this forum, I'm disappointed that yours was the only response out of 300 lookers???
I can perform all the basic maintenance that you referenced and the car I'm looking at has been timely serviced. I wouldn't be concerned except I've read some expensive clutch tales.
Unrelated, I looked at your car... very nice. Do I read the rev report to state that you exceeded the limit by 4 revolutions, at 304 hrs? I intend to get a ppi on the car I looking at. Just want to make sure I read it right.

There is more activity most of the time here. As far as my DME , I didn t exceed the limit. the first three ranges are fine. Somewhere the ranges are listed with the RPM s . Most cars, esp 6 speeds, have many ranges full. So my dme would be considered very very clean. Do a search on the ranges here and you ll see what is a good or bad dme. Read up on that because you ll need to read them when looking at cars.
BTW I bought my car from Ft Meyers Porsche, Fla with 5K miles. Even drove it back to NY.

The concerns you have about maintenance are easily found in the Porsche maintenance internal. Also, if the car has been driven that hard, there should be other signs. How about oil consumption, tires, suspension, interior wear? If the clutch is your main concern, get a quote and factor that into your offer. Since "there's no substitute" and you noted you "want the Porsche", it should be worth the effort! We only live once!
