Convertible top issue....

Hello all!

So I purchased a clean low mileage 997 Carrera Cab a few months back. All has been great but recently I noticed some oil stains on the garage floor in two different spots, one stain on each side of the car. I then went to put top down and it struggled heavily! It BARELY made it closed. I guess my questions are...Does anyone have tips or DIY on fixing this or rebuilding the hydrolics in the most cost effective ways? Also, what is the typical cost to replace parts needed if I decide to go to a shop? Thanks for the advice in advance.

Not heard this problem before. I'd ask around for reputable indie in your area and see what they suggest.

From what I hear, the convertible top eventually leaking oil is a pretty common occurrence. I'm just not familiar with any options that's might be available such as rebuilding the hydrologic reservoir or buy brand new and finally cost of either option.

I have a 08 cab and I had the exact same symptoms. I would guess that it is what they call "ramps." Those are the two hydraulic pumps on either side that raise and lower the top. Mine went out about 8 months ago and it was close to $4k at my dealer. I caught mine early and the only oil I had was in the top storage area. Good luck.

My 2010 C4S Cab has been rock solid, but now I'm wondering if there is a way to check fluid levels in the hydraulic pumps? I did have a Jag XK8 convertible many moons ago that had a regular, but small, leak in the pump. As long as I kept the fluid topped up, it worked fine

Good luck with the fix, and please keep us updated on troubleshooting and the eventual fix (plus any preventative maintenance that we should be doing, if any).

Thx man. I called a well known indie shop today called Foreign Affairs and they quoted me $1,100 out the door . .Yes the units are rebuilt and not new but the shop is offering a 3 year warranty. Many folks have let FA do this repair with great results.

From what others are saying, it appears when you have leaking , the reservoirs are past saving therefore refilling with oil is useless. If I'm wrong someone please correct me. I had oil on my garage floor on both sides of the car, so I knew both units were shot. The good news is that I'm being told that once fixed, it'll be years till this happens again.

Same issue here when I bought my 40k mile 07 C2S. Brought it home and noticed a leak around the rear tire. Took it in and sure enough one of the hydraulic cylinders that controls the top was leaking. $1800 parts and labor later, all good.

Buy a can of silicone lubricant and spray it on a rag. Lightly apply it to all the touch points including the very top edge of your windows. I had the same issue on my E46 M3 Vert and this cured the problem. I'm not sure if that's related, but it can't hurt. Good luck.

Quattshot,

Did you ever pull the trigger with Foreign Affairs to fix the leaky parts for the convertible top ? I have the exact same issue and want to know if they did a good job at a reasonable price. Thanks.
